Here is a recap on the Handheld console specifically!

Project Canis – What Is It

Project Canis is the upcoming PlayStation handheld console. Sony has not released a new handheld since the PS Vita, but for many players, the classic PSP remains their most memorable device. According to the latest leaks, Canis could be the true successor, making it essentially the PSP 2!

We already covered the leaked specs for both the PlayStation 6 and the PS6 Handheld console, but here are the latest details on Project Canis:

  • Plays PS5 and PS4 games, possibly using a low-power mode
  • Powered by a 3nm chip with:
    • 4 Zen 6c CPU cores
    • 12-20 RDNA 5 GPU units at 1.6-2GHz
    • LPDDR5X RAM at 7500MHz+
    • 128-bit bus
  • Estimated performance: about 50% of a PS5, but with better ray tracing

In plain terms? It is not quite as strong as a PS5, but it is built to be portable and efficient, and still offers very impressive visuals, especially for a handheld.

Features and Design

  • Touchscreen
  • Dual microphones
  • Haptic vibration
  • USB-C port with video out (like USB-C to HDMI)
  • MicroSD slot
  • M.2 SSD slot for extra storage

Does It Outperform Other Handheld Consoles

The handheld is expected to be bigger than a PS Vita but smaller than a Nintendo Switch, with a design similar to the GPD Win 4. Some rumors suggest it aims to outperform the ROG Ally X, but on paper, it most likely won’t surpass the Ally X’s raw performance.

However, it is expected to outperform the Switch 2. The Switch 2’s performance is definitely a step up from the original Switch, but it is still more of a mid-tier portable console in terms of raw power.

Compared to the ROG Ally X, the PS6 handheld should be smaller and designed primarily for true handheld portability. The Ally X is bulkier and more suited to couch PC gaming, offering more power but at the cost of size and comfort for on-the-go use.

Price and Release Window

The Canis handheld is expected to launch for $399-$499, making it a direct rival to the Nintendo Switch 2. Sony is reportedly planning mass production by mid-2027, aiming for a Holiday 2027 or early 2028 release, so around the same time as the PlayStation 6 home console.

A True Next-Gen Portable?

If the leak is accurate, this could be the most powerful PlayStation handheld ever, finally offering a full console experience on the go, with support for modern PlayStation titles.

We are still waiting on official confirmation from Sony, but one thing is for sure! With the Canis handheld and PS6 possibly launching together, the next console generation is going to be huge!
