It looks like Resident Evil Requiem (Resident Evil 9) might be changing things up in a big way. Known leaker Dusk Golem recently shared new information on various social media, including on Twitter/X, giving us a taste of what to expect from this new adventure that brings us back to Raccoon City.
The Last of Us Combat?

According to the leak, the developers are putting a lot of work into making the combat feel more dynamic and fluid, drawing some inspiration from The Last of Us Part 2, but still keeping its own style. You can expect improved animations, environmental physics, and more interactivity, especially in the sections where Grace is playable.
There is also a focus on open-level design, with large explorable areas like Raccoon City. To get around, you may even be able to use vehicles! Yes, that could mean motorcycles or other rides to cross the city.
Other points from the leak include:
- The ability to switch between first-person and third-person view at any time.
- A new lighting and shadow system.
- AI improvements for stalker enemies so they react more intelligently.
- Use of the hair engine from Pragmata for more realistic character details.
And on top of that, Dusk Golem claims this could be Leon’s final Resident Evil game, making it his big send-off.
A Cycle of Inspiration Between Resident Evil and the Last of Us

Some players are worried about the comparison with the Last of Us combat. However, most forget that the influence goes both ways!
- The Last of Us originally took heavy inspiration from Resident Evil 4, including its gameplay style and even the idea for its fungal infection. This was partly inspired by RE4’s Las Plagas parasite.
- Over the years, Resident Evil has borrowed some ideas back, for example, Revelations 2 had gameplay elements similar to those of The Last of Us.
- Even Resident Evil 2 Remake included moments that felt similar.
So, this back-and-forth is nothing new. When you are building on a solid combat foundation like the Last of Us or Resident Evil 4, some overlap is almost unavoidable. And both creators are not ashamed to share where they got their inspiration from!
If this leak is accurate, Resident Evil Requiem could deliver one of the most ambitious entries in the series, hopefully with Leon Kennedy getting the send-off he deserves. Of course, this is just leaked information, so things could still change by the time the game releases. Keep an eye on our latest news, as we will keep you updated! Especially with Resident Evil Requiem set to get new gameplay reveals during Gamescom!
