Time sure does Skyride very quickly, and we’ve reached another round number in WoW’s lifespan. And it’s not just the number itself that’s interesting, as it puts the midpoint of the game so far at one very bad patch, with an extremely significant one very, very close by.
A Lot of Days and a Bad Midpoint
ADayvanCowboy noticed today was special, as it marked 7500 days of WoW existing on live servers. That’s 20 years and 6 and a half months, or 246 and a half months if you want some alternate numbering. This particular number also puts one of the most notorious patches in WoW history in the exact middle of the timeline.
The “Selfie patch” is the community name for Warlords of Draenor’s first content patch, 6.1. And while it brought plenty more than just the notorious S.E.L.F.I.E. Camera and Twitter integration, that’s what it’s most remembered for. The rest of the patch was very scarce on new content, only adding some new character models for Blood Elves, a new Heirloom tab, and Garrison features in addition to the usual bug fixes and tuning. The camera and Twitter integration are the thing it’s most remembered for, as back then it was a bit of a meme and another of those “WoW selling out” moments.
The WoW Token
Interestingly enough, the very next patch, only a month later, brought the WoW token. That particular addition was a seismic event in WoW’s history, still very much referenced to this day. And so while the Selfie is technically around a month closer to the midpoint, a truly significant event in the game’s history, like the token’s introduction, seems a lot more fitting, and is pretty close anyway.
You can find plenty of nostalgia, not-so-great comments about the Selfie patch, and a whole lot of “boy, we’re old” comments in the above thread!
So, how many of those 7500 days have you spent playing? Were you around when the Selfie camera and WoW Token dropped?
