All Sources of Housing Decor and How It Works

We’re so excited that the doors are opening to the public on Midnight and Housing for the first time in the alpha test! We can’t wait to hear your feedback and see what everyone begins to build. As people are checking things out for the first time, we thought it would be useful to show you a wide variety of decor and discuss just how they can be acquired. If you’d like to learn more about our philosophy around rewards and get a bit more background information, you can read our previously published article.

As we mentioned previously, decor comes from almost anywhere in World of Warcraft, so let’s walk through them.

Once Upon a Quest

Playing through the game, you’ll come across many quests that reward decorations. Most quests can only be done once (and only reward the decor once per account) but multiple copies of a given piece of decor are often desired. We’ve made sure that when decor comes from a one-time source like a quest or achievement, there are avenues to get additional copies (usually from a vendor for various currencies), so you don’t need to do that content again.

For example, Alliance players might remember the old quest “The Perenolde Tiara,” which sent players from Stormwind to the Ruins of Alterac in the Hillsbrad Foothills. It always awarded a decent chunk of Stormwind reputation, but now it’ll also award a Jewelcrafter’s Tent. Once earned, if the player wants more Jewelcrafter’s Tents, they can purchase additional copies in Stormwind for gold.

On the Horde side, players going through the storyline of Battle for Azeroth may remember adventuring in Vol’dun, rescuing the thunder lizard loa Akunda who had been trapped by one of his cultists, Akunda the Exalted. After finishing the quest “Clearing the Fog,” players will earn the decor Akunda the Tapestry. Then they can purchase additional copies in Zuldazar for War Resources.

Finally, on Kun-Lai Summit, players may have climbed a mountain to help a seer reach the top and learn more about the late Pandaren Emperor Shaohao. In addition to some very stylish footwear, players will now also get a Shaohao Ceremonial Bell to place in their house. Afterwards, more copies can be purchased from the Lorewalkers in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms for gold.

With Midnight’s launch, any quest that grants decor will do so retroactively for anyone who has completed them.

What an Achievement

Similar to quests, some achievements award decor once (and again, only once per account) and then unlock the ability to acquire more copies elsewhere.

For example, the achievement More Dots (25 Player) from completing Onyxia’s Lair (25 Player) awards the player the decor Head of the Broodmother to mount on their wall (or anywhere they like really). If the player wants additional copies after earning the achievement, the goblin innkeeper Axle in Mudsprocket will sell the player a Definitely Real, Not At All Fake Head of the Broodmother that may not be real but when used as decor is indistinguishable.

Completing the enormous achievement Back from the Beyond requires the player to do virtually everything the Shadowlands expansion has to offer. It will now award—in addition to the existing mount—the Portal to Damnation. After earning that achievement, if the player wants more (nonfunctional) Torghast portals, they can purchase more from Ve’nari in the Maw for a tremendous amount of Stygia.

Finally, for PVP players, The Master of Twin Peaks achievement, earned through activity in the Twin Peaks Battleground, now awards the Iron Dragonmaw Gate decor. After the first is earned, additional copies can be purchased in capital cities for Marks of Honor.

Just like decor earned from quests, players who have already completed an achievement that grants decor will be rewarded retroactively.

You’re Getting a Reputation

Reputation with the various factions and cultures of Azeroth is another avenue to earn decor. With the launch of Midnight, there are over 100 pieces of decor possible from across 26 different factions across almost every expansion and we’ll be continuing to add more legacy decor to various factions over time.

Here are a few available starting with Housing Early Access:

• The Lorewalkers from Mists of Pandaria offers Revered characters bookcases. They have two versions available, one with and one without books on the shelves (Lorewalker’s Bookcase and Empty Lorewalker’s Bookcase).
• Talanji’s Expedition, a Horde faction from Battle for Azeroth, sells Zandalari torch decor, including the Zandalari War Torch and Zandalari Sconce for reaching Honored.
• Warlords of Draenor’s Council of Exarchs faction, open to Alliance players, has an entire Shadowmoon Greenhouse and Grand Draenethyst Lamp available at Exalted.

Shopping the Neighborhood Vendors

The vendors in the Housing Neighborhoods are happy to sell the players additional decor themed and created for their neighborhoods. This decor is generally inexpensive to give you a quick start on your Housing journey.

Some examples of the Neighborhood vendor decor:

• The Large Razorwind Gazebo, themed for Razorwind Shores. (There’s also the Wooden Gazebo equivalent for Founder’s Point.)
• A Wrought Iron Chandelier from Founder’s Point (and its Razorwind equivalent, the Iron Chain Chandelier.)
• Several kinds of textiles, rocks, and plants, fitting each neighborhood’s theme.

If you only play in one Neighborhood, but want the opposite faction’s decorations, each neighborhood has a small area with a band of smugglers happy to sell you decor from the other Neighborhood.

Raid and Dungeon Decor is Boss

Raid bosses and dungeons can also have decor assigned to them. In the case of raids, individual bosses can have decor, while in dungeons, only the final boss will drop the decor. If a boss drops decor, it has a 100% chance to drop one piece per kill! If you want multiple copies, you’ll have to run it multiple times but you won’t have to hunt down the “rare drop” decor over many runs.

On initial launch, most bosses won’t have decor, but we’ll continue to add to the back catalog post-launch, so let us know what you’re looking for.

Some examples:

• Neltharion’s Lair gives players the Thunder Totem Brazier
• Shadowfang Keep gives players the Gilnean Circular Rug
• Waycrest Manor gives players the creepy Fate of All Life Painting.
• Shrine of the Storm drops the Tidesage’s Fireplace.

Making it With Professions

Every crafting profession will be able to make decor from every expansion! You’ll need to make sure you’re 80% through the profession’s skill for that expansion, then most recipes are easily obtained from relevant trainers.

For example:

• Inscription is, among other things, the woodworking profession, so those skilled in Legion Inscription can craft the stylish Dalaran Display Shelves.
• Enchanters craft magical things of many kinds. Enchanters well-versed in Outland Enchanting can create several varieties of Draenei holographic runes – both the Draenei Holo-Dais and the Draenei Holo-Path. Skilled Pandaria Enchanters will be able to create an Intense Mogu Brazier with blue flames.
• Jewelcrafters create stone decor and fine metalwork, so skilled Dragon Isles Jewelcrafters will be able to create Valdrakken Fences and Valdrakken Fenceposts. Proficient Draenor Jewelcrafers are able to make a glowing purple Draenethyst Sconce.

Taking on Endeavors and Delves

Endeavors and Delves will also be getting decoration rewards but you’ll have to wait until the launch of Midnight to learn about those.

This only represents the main areas of decor acquisition, but part of the joy is going to be discovering just where else things can be found.
