Private servers have been around for nearly as long as World of Warcraft, with players wishing to revisit earlier versions of the game that were no longer available. With Blizzard releasing official Classic servers, many of these private servers have drifted away from a “Blizzlike” Classic experience and have instead ventured into Classic+ content. These Classic+ servers aim to restore content that was previously incomplete, cut for time, or even create their own brand new content.
These private servers have been steadily growing in popularity, with many players wanting to see Azeroth in a new light, while still keeping the feel and playstyle of Classic. Season of Discovery missed the mark on this for many players, which many felt was just a “Project 60” version of retail instead of a new Classic+ experience. With Classic reaching Mists of Pandaria, this sentiment still rings true, with many players turning to Classic+ private servers to meet their needs.
The Fate of a Large Private Server
One of the largest Classic+ private servers is now facing a lawsuit from Blizzard Entertainment, as the company moves to enforce copyright laws on World of Warcraft content. This lawsuit targets the private server’s main business company, and also names several individuals involved with the server.
Classic+ in Official Development?
Players have also noted the similarities to the original launch of Classic, when Blizzard filed copyright strikes against private servers while developing Classic. This has players speculating that Classic+ could be in development, with Blizzard shutting down third-party Classic+ private servers in the same way.
Private WoW servers are against the Blizzard Terms of Use. If you want to play World of Warcraft, you must download the official game client through the Blizzard App.
