We have an inflection point! It seems retail and Classic Wow are about to converge. Well, in 45 years or so, but still! The header image is from a pretty great WoW machinima, World of Cyberpunk by Duren, so head on over and check it out! And it was only 7 years off! A true WoW prophet.
The Expansion Convergence
In the “completely useless but actually quite interesting” category of statistics, zyxaakrene thought to check out how the expansion release cadence for retail WoW and Classic will eventually end up! As it turns out, Classic will overtake regular WoW around 2071/2!
At the current pace of release, both versions of WoW will converge in the year 2070, as they both reach expansion 33!
And right after that, we’ll see the ultimate underdog story complete itself, as Classic becomes retail and retail Classic! Either that or it’s when WoW 2 releases. It’s clearly only one of those two options. Nothing else is possible!
Joking aside, Classic is releasing faster than retail, which makes sense, and at some point will have to either stop or slow down, or we’ll have Legion 3 or Wrath of the Lich King 4 releasing in both retail and Classic versions at the same time!
The Real (Funny) Takeaways
As you’d imagine, the community had quite the takes on this one, all completely serious! Firstly, they boldly challenge the assumption that the Classic release schedule will stay as-is, but not in the way you’d think. They decided to take into account the actual flow of the original expansion releases, as well as their reception, with some slightly painful, but not altogether incorrect conclusions.
The Jailer disapproved of that one. Ironically enough, Shadowlands Classic may just be one of the better ones, as fixing a lot of that expansion’s problems (no, not the story, unfortunately) should help it redeem at least part of itself.
And, as we mentioned already, there is only one conclusion as to what happens after 2070!
The fact that it’ll be expansion 33 that converges the two WoW’s didn’t escape players either, with a particular currently popular game making it into the discussion.
There’s even a combo between Clair Obscur and Cyberpunk!
And, of course, some are looking at this far future and evaluating the progression of their own skills in the game.
So this was a pretty fun fact that obviously won’t actually happen. The real release cadence of Classic vs retail will be interesting to follow, but obviously Classic will eventually catch up, unless we get even faster releases of retail.
