Combat Addon Restrictions Eased in Midnight

Blizzard took a pretty hard stance when announcing the complete removal of any addon interaction with the combat log starting in Midnight. Now that players and, more importantly, addon creators, have gotten a hold of how this all actually works, there may have been some unintended consequences. As many reported, it seems there are some addons getting caught in the crossfire. Blizzard didn’t intend these to be affected. These include things like break timers, loot councils, role-playing addons, sharing notes and similar.

Today Blizzard announced they will be easing the combat log interaction restrictions. These changes will allow these benign addons to still function. They also said that their initial restrictions were too broad. For now the solution will be that the restrictions will only apply during a boss encounter or Mythic+ run.

Immediately in this first day of testing, we’ve seen feedback on how currently, there’s a complete lockdown on the ability for addons to parse chat and addon-comms channels while in instances. We’re seeing it break addons that support loot councils, break timers, and other benign communications (e.g. sharing raid notes or M+ keystone information).

We agree that this is starting out excessively broad, and we’re going to make changes to only apply the new logic while there is an active raid encounter or M+ run underway. Our goal will be to make it so that tools that facilitate sharing information before or after combat won’t be impacted.

And we’ll update our Alpha development notes when the above is implemented.
