It’s time for more stats! We’re back to Data for Azeroth for, well, data about Azeroth. This time we’re checking out just what the most played class and race combos are over the past 6 years, since the site has been collecting data. Before we get into it, care to guess what the top combinations are? They may not be what you think, as the most played spec in dungeons and raids in the current endgame isn’t actually at the top!
All Levels Combos
We’re starting with the overall number, which counts characters of all levels. While that may include mostly inactive abandoned chars, it also counts the many, many level-locked twinks that are destroying Timewalking regularly.
We can see that Paladins aren’t at the top as they are in all raid and dungeon endgame charts! The top of the chart is very mechanically obvious, as the classes that have very limited race selection options dominate.
Night Elf Druid is still the top combo, and it would be interesting to know how much that ancient Vanilla box cover/trailer had to do with that! Then we have a much more modern class, as both flavors of Demon Hunter fill the top 3, with the Horde edging out the Alliance. Then there’s the two main Paladin flavors, and the elves win here again! The seemingly unexpected combo of Dracthyr arrive, but you have to take into consideration that those are the only races that class can be, just like Demon Hunters, so there’s absolutely no dilution there. The OG Horde Druids finish off the limited race selection bracket in 8th.
Then we move on to the larger race selection classes, with Warriors and Hunters coming out on top! There’s even more Druids later on, with the Trolls joining in. Shamans and Priests soon join in, and we have to go down to No.16 to find the first Mage. The stats get really low around the first Warlock, around 1%, and you can check out the full chart, going all the way down to the 0.0% Pandaren Warlocks, here.

Max Level Combos
We’ll take a quick look at just the max level characters as well. The elves still dominate, even more so than the other chart. Horde Paladins make it into 2nd, making it an all-elf top 4. Tauren Druids break up the Dracthyr unity, and Hunters come in much earlier – but it’s the elves again!

So, how do you feel the charts represent your local class-race experience? Is it all elves all the time in your server cluster as well?
