No Classic Hardcore? Then No OnlyFangs 3, Says Sodapoppin

On the Punching Down Podcast, Sodapoppin mentioned that OnlyFangs 3 could be years away, as Season 3 will only happen if a TBC or Classic Plus Hardcore server is announced.

What is OnlyFangs?

OnlyFangs was a streamer-only guild in Hardcore World of Warcraft, led by the streamer Chance “Sodapoppin” Morris. Its purpose was to group popular content creators and streamers, many of whom were new to WoW entirely, introducing them to the game and creating a ton of content in the process.

The guild has been created twice so far. The first time was as Alliance on the original Hardcore servers, and again with the release of Fresh Anniversary Realms as Horde on the Doomhowl server. In addition to the baseline Hardcore rules of only having one life, the guild added several self-imposed challenges to increase the difficulty:

  • Players can group and play with any other Player on the Server, but they cannot raid with anybody outside of the Guild.
  • Players cannot use the Auction House.
  • Players cannot accept mail from anybody outside of the Guild.
  • Players cannot accept or perform trades with anybody outside of the Guild.

The goal was to create a “Self-Found Guild”, forcing players to work together to help each other succeed. This was accomplished by the guild hosting several gear giveaways, referred to as “Tribute Chests“, where gear was distributed to various players.

The Success of OnlyFangs

OnlyFangs’ second season drew a lot of attention as it involved hundreds of major streamers such as Sodapoppin and Tyler1, bringing tens of thousands of viewers to the event. The high stakes that come with Hardcore World of Warcraft made for some very tense situations, especially as several of the guild members had never played WoW beforehand! This led to the creation of plenty of content, with players dying, groups wiping, and drama soaring as tensions rose in various situations. Below are some of the best and worst moments from OnlyFangs:

And who could forget the epic duel between Tyler1 and Sodapoppin for Guild Master?

Not everything was laughs and fun, as there was also plenty of drama involved…

The End of OnlyFangs 2

OnlyFangs 2 ended with Blackwing Lairs’ launch, where the guild faced severe DDOS attacks, causing several players in the raid to die. With this attack, Sodapoppin decided to call it quits rather than putting players through the stress of raiding in Hardcore WoW with the threat of a possible DDOS attack hanging in the air.

Blizzard addressed this DDOS attack and actually revived the characters who died from it. This allowed the guild to return to BWL with its guild members now revived and clear the raid with only a few deaths in total!

Closing Thoughts

OnlyFangs was a huge success for both the streamers and viewers, as it attracted the attention of many people and created thousands of hours of content to be watched. The tension that Hardcore WoW brings, alongside people playing WoW for the first time, turned the game into a sort of “streamer soap drama”. This was a breath of fresh air for many, breathing new life into the World of Warcraft as we got to see the game through several new players’ points of view.

Did you watch any of the OnlyFangs content? What were some of your favorite moments? Are you looking forward to OnlyFangs returning in the future? We are looking forward to future highlights, drama, and of course, plenty of character deaths!
