Why the Twilight’s Blade Is Back — and Why Azeroth Isn’t Safe Yet

The Twilight’s Blade are threatening Azeroth once again. Xal’atath’s cult wants the end of the world, and they want it now. As usual, only we can stop them. But who are these madmen, and why do they keep turning up?

Who Are the Twilight’s Blade?

Throughout Azeroth’s history, versions of the Twilight Cult have risen time and time again. While their names, their leaders, and even their chosen gods have a tendency to change, their basic goal always seems to stay the same – to bring about the end of the universe.

Once known as the Twilight’s Hammer, this cult actually has its origins in another world completely. It was the Pale orcs of Draenor who first spoke about the Hour of Twilight, a prophesied apocalyptical event where the Void would consume the universe and snuff out all life in existence. The cult was first brought to Azeroth by the Old Horde, where they soon began to worship the Old Gods. Over the years, they would spread in secret throughout all of society. Their goal – to release the Old Gods, bring back the Black Empire, and usher in the Hour of Twilight.

The Twilight’s Hammer played a major part during the Cataclysm, when Deathwing returned and shattered the world. It was during this time that their corruption transformed part of the Eastern Kingdoms into the Twilight Highlands we know today, where they established their Bastion of Twilight. But of course, we’ve defeated Deathwing, the Old Gods, and the Twilight threat, so why are they back now?

Alliance with Xal’atath

It was more recently when the Twilight’s Cult reformed and started calling themselves the Twilight’s Blade – a name in honor of Xal’atath and the Blade she was once bound to. Xal’atath has given new life to the cult, are actively recruiting again and have a new leader – the ogre Mor’duuun. Once again, they’re speaking about the end of the world, promising that the Void will consume Azeroth.

And so it falls to us to head to their base of operations in the Twilight Highlands and put a stop to the Twilight’s Blade before they can bring about the end of the universe. Will we succeed? It’s the pre-patch event, so chances are high, but it is also going to be followed by Midnight. In other words, while we might be effective in slowing down the Twilight’s Blade, I wouldn’t dismiss the threat they represent completely any time soon. The war for the continued existence of our world is far from over.
