Before we delve deeper into the subject, we need to explain what is and isn’t tradable in Diablo 4.
What Items Can You Trade in Diablo 4?
You can trade the following between players:
- Common Items;
- Magic Items;
- Rare Items;
- Gems;
- Gold;
- Elixirs.
What Items Can’t You Trade in Diablo 4?
The following items are account-bound and cannot be traded:
- Quest Items;
- Enchanted Items;
- Legendaries;
- Unique Items;
- Currency other than gold.
As you can see above, the game is pretty limited when it comes to trading gear. It’s mostly because Blizzard does not want third parties to sell gear/items which would result in an unfair advantage.
Downsides to Trading Restrictions
But that decision comes with a few downsides. During Group Play, you cannot trade items with other members. It’s mostly felt when you get a drop that would be perfect for your friend, but you simply cannot trade it.
An Auction House wouldn’t work either because you can trade gold, so either way, players would end up buying gear from third-parties.
Possible Solution
A compromise between being able to trade at least some gear (Legendaries) with friends, but keeping Uniques account-bound to prevent RL transactions could definitely be looked into.
An interesting discussion on the subject is taking place on Reddit if you’re interested to learn more about what the community thinks.
I’m wondering how blizzard think the game benefited by restricting trade so much
