Things are suddenly looking really bad for Gang of Dragon, the upcoming action game led by legendary Toshihiro Nagoshi, best known for his work on the Yakuza and Like a Dragon franchise.
After months of rumors surrounding funding issues, Nagoshi Studio’s official website has now gone offline entirely, and that makes a lot of people concerned about the game. Will the project survive, or does this mean it is over for Gang of Dragons?
From One of the Most Anticipated Reveals to Silence
Gang of Dragon was officially revealed during The Game Awards 2025 and immediately hyped up so many players thanks to its Yakuza-like atmosphere and similar gameplay. The game was described as a new action-adventure game set in the streets of Shinjuku, Tokyo.
It would star Korean actor Ma Dong-seok as protagonist Shin Ji-seong, with the story focusing on a lot of intense human drama in Kabukicho and the criminal underworld of Tokyo.
For many players, it basically looked like the spiritual successor fans hoped Nagoshi would eventually make after leaving Sega. It was heavily wishlisted on Steam, and players kept waiting for more information about the game, but that never came.
NetEase Pulled Funding Earlier This Year
According to the reports we could find, NetEase decided earlier this year to stop funding Nagoshi Studio after learning the project would apparently require an additional $44 million to finish development. Following that decision, Nagoshi seemed to search for new investors, but the studio’s YouTube channel has also been deleted, some trailers were removed, and now the official studio website has also gone offline.
None of that confirms the game is officially canceled yet, but it is clearly not a good sign.
Fans Are Worried the Game May Never Release
Right now, there has been no official cancellation announcement from either Nagoshi Studio or NetEase. However, losing publisher funding, channels, trailers, and now the studio website itself usually points to serious internal problems, and it really is not looking good for the game.
That is especially unfortunate because Gang of Dragon had quickly become one of the more interesting upcoming action games after its reveal. Between the Tokyo setting, the crime-drama tone, the unique main protagonist, and Nagoshi’s involvement, many players were already calling it the closest thing to a new-gen Yakuza-style experience outside Sega itself.
At this point, all you can do is wait and see if a new publisher steps in and takes over the funding, or if Nagoshi manages otherwise. We definitely would love to see the game release. It looked amazing!
But honestly, after the website shutdown, the future of the project feels more uncertain than ever.
