With World of Warcraft now more than 20 years old, Classic players continue to find new ways to spice up the leveling process. The following challenge, brought to life by Fred the Purifier from MMONerds, is definitely one of the more creative ones we have seen in recent years: He is trying to reach Level 60 exclusively by slaying undead enemies.
The Rules of the Undead-Only Challenge
The main rule of this challenge is crystal clear: The player may only kill undead mobs. Additionally, a Solo Self-Found-style rule prohibits trading with other players or using the Auction House. Last but not least, equipment must come from undead drops or crafting professions.
How the Challenge Gained Traction
Fred’s challenge began as a single-player YouTube project more than three months ago, but that was only the beginning. Since then, almost 300 members have joined The Grand Crusade, an Alliance guild on Celebras. According to Fred, the previously quiet Classic Era EU realm has come back to life in the process.
We created a guild called The Grand Crusade so viewers could join the challenge.
We expected a handful of people.
Instead, The Grand Crusade has grown to almost 300 members on Celebras, our Discord has passed 350 members, and there was enough interest that we’ve now created a second guild for North American players.
So somehow a ridiculous leveling challenge about refusing to kill anything that isn’t already dead has ended up bringing a community to one of Classic Era’s quietest servers.

The Undead Are Fighting Back
Recent activity on Celebras is not limited to the Alliance side of things, though. Several Undead players have started opposing The Grand Crusade by role-playing along, creating an emergent faction war!
The long-term objective for Fred and the guild remains reaching Level 60. However, with an entire community now formed around the undead-only challenge, the grand goal is to take The Grand Crusade into endgame content. We are certainly looking forward to seeing this exciting challenge reach Classic’s endgame!
