WoW Forever’s Camping system gives players a reason to stop along the road, share profession buffs and spend a little time with whoever happens to wander over. We now know more about where those camps can go, how players will find them and what happens when someone brings a better upgrade.
In MMORPG.com’s BlizzCon interview, Josh Greenfield and Jeff Parrott answered several questions about Camping. That included a reminder that choosing somewhere comfortable to sit does not mean choosing somewhere safe.
Nearby Camps Will Let You Know They Are There
You will not have to rely entirely on spotting a fire between the trees. Greenfield explained that players will receive a buff indicating a camp is nearby, encouraging them to look around and find it.
There are restrictions on placement, though. Certain areas, including cities, will prevent players from setting up camp. Camps also need a minimum amount of space between them, although Blizzard has not provided an exact distance.
You still have plenty of freedom outside those restrictions. Parrott mentioned setting up on a beach or beside a stream, which sounds like a pretty good way to take a break between quests.
Better Profession Fixtures Can Replace Weaker Ones
MMORPG.com asked a very fair question: what happens when players start demanding the best profession buffs before letting anyone join their camp?
Greenfield explained that a stronger version of a fixture can replace the weaker version already placed. His example was a player arriving with a better sharpening stone and upgrading what the camp already had.
He also said that accessing larger camps should not require a major financial investment, describing progression as mainly restricted by level. Blizzard will watch how players use the system and make adjustments if optimizing camps becomes a problem.
Picking a Bad Campsite Can Still Get You Killed
One internal tester learned this by placing a camp on the road in Duskwood, stepping away and returning to find that Stitches had killed her.
Apparently, he was not interested in sharing profession buffs.
Greenfield also estimated that camps and their fixtures last around 10 minutes. He was uncertain about that number during the interview, so treat it as an early estimate rather than a confirmed final duration. His answer did not establish whether the owner’s death immediately removes the camp.
