Classic-Style World Map Returns in WoW Patch 12.1 Eastern Kingdoms Update

Azeroth’s maps have gone through plenty of iterations since World of Warcraft began, from extending continents, to adding entire new worlds—and the world map is changing again with Patch 12.1.

12.1’s new zone, The Coiled Isle, is being added to the map, however, this is not the only difference. One of the more subtle changes coming in WoW’s next patch is something you probably wouldn’t notice straight away: the Eastern Kingdoms map no longer has zone borders.

This feels very reminiscent of Classic WoW’s world maps. Whilst zone boundaries still exist in the Classic version of the game, Azeroth’s maps are presented in a far less segmented fashion than more modern iterations.

It also raises a bigger question: could this be Blizzard preparing to revamp more of the older parts of Azeroth? With the incredible response to revamped zones, Eversong Woods and Silvermoon City, arriving in Midnight, it doesn’t feel too far-fetched to wonder if Blizzard intends on refreshing more of Azeroth’s old zones.

Would you like to see Blizzard revamp more of Azeroth?
