In the latest World of Warcraft: Midnight Alpha build, Blizzard has begun enforcing room placement costs—and players aren’t happy. What sounded like a small tuning pass has become a major restriction on how large and customizable player homes can be.
What Changed?
Previously, housing used a simple system: one room = one budget unit. That’s now gone. In the current Alpha, each room now has its own individual cost, meaning larger rooms consume more of your total budget.
The total room budget cap sits at 24, and that’s already proving extremely tight.
For context, Blizzard’s Housing Virtual Tour, still live on Battle.net and linked to Midnight pre-orders, no longer fits within the new 24-point limit. The featured house costs 40 budget points, well over the current cap. Under the new system, that entire second floor? It’s gone.

Why Does It Matter?
The appeal of housing lies in creative freedom, building sprawling estates, personalizing spaces, and showing off designs. With these strict new limits, players can only build a small handful of rooms, rather than the larger, more complex homes we were expecting to create. For a feature meant to be one of Midnight‘s cornerstones, this definitely feels like a step backward.
Why Is Blizzard Doing This?
There are some reasonable guesses:
- Performance concerns – Bigger builds mean more memory and rendering stress.
- Server stability – Alpha testing might be revealing lag or loading issues with higher budgets.
- Feature control – Tight limits now could give Blizzard more room to expand later via updates or progression.
Don’t Panic (Yet)
Remember, this is early Alpha, not the final system. Budgets, caps, and progression rules are still being tuned, and there’s plenty of room for adjustments. These restrictions might only be temporary as Blizzard continues refining the feature. So, fingers crossed, we will see bigger, more flexible housing options by launch!
