Guardian Druid is getting a massive tree rework in Midnight. These changes, (alongside the broad removal of talents/abilities across all specs) open up several new and fun talent combinations.
Smoother Rage, Smarter Talents
Guardian hasn’t changed dramatically, but it has significantly less APM (Actions Per Minute) requirement thanks to the removal of the Thorns of Iron talent, which simplifies rage spending.
Stat wise, gearing remains mostly the same. Our tree now grants plenty of free Mastery, making it our lowest prio stat. Haste stays top priority, with Crit and Versatility roughly equal depending on whether the incoming damage is magical or physical.
We also gained access to some cool new talents alongside Apex talents which further enables flexibility and adds multiple viable spec options, which was something that was majorly lacking in The War Within, as we remained essentially the same talent build the entire expansion.
The return of Dream of Cenarius is something to watch closely. With WeakAuras gone, any ability that shifts us out of Bear Form can be risky if not properly tracked.
Fortunately, the talent is now in a great spot and synergizes well with our Apex talents.
After the Wildfire has been placed in a fantastic central position and buffed to 20 yards (up from 12), allowing our tank niche to return to massive group healing utility.
One of the new talents that I am most excited to play with is Sundering Roar. This is a 1 minute cooldown that resets the cooldown of
Thrash and allows it to stack up to 5 times more and then explode after 12 seconds, immediately dealing the damage the extra 5 stacks would have done over their duration.
This finally fixes both our snap threat and burst AoE issues that have been a problem for a very long time. It also has a lot of bonus fun potential to play around in certain damage amp scenarios.
Guardian’s Back on Top for Raids and Mythic+
Overall, these changes push Guardian well ahead of where it’s been before. We have multiple forms of utility being added and nothing significant removed.
We should be back to providing a huge amount of group healing in both raids and Mythic+ and both our single target and AoE rotations have seen buffs.
This definitely puts Guardian back on the radar for one of the top tanks in both M+ and raids alike.
Did Blizzard Finally Nail Guardian’s Design?
Blizzard really seems to have taken note of issues and complaints brought up throughout the recent expansion and tried hard to target all these areas, and so far, they have done an excellent job at attempting to mend the issues that have plagued Guardian for a long time.
Snap threat, AoE burst damage, and lack of meaningful utility have been recurring complaints for Guardian every tier. These issues have all been targeted in Midnight and feel relatively resolved in general.
Less APM, More Fun
Guardian’s APM requirement was a massive issue during the last two expansions.
Removing Thorns of Iron eliminated the off-GCD Ironfur spam for DPS and brought us back a simpler Rage cycle, keeping one stack of Ironfur active, then spending the rest on
Maul for damage or extra Ironfur stacks for defense.
This was definitely a massively requested change from the majority of the Guardian community and top ranked players alike.
The rework also moved weaker or unnecessary defensive talents to the sides, making them truly optional and removing forced paths through low-value nodes.
This enables us to take more and more valuable talents with our now available talent points.
Classic Guardian Feel, Modern Flow
Overall, Guardian Druid feels completely refreshed. It keeps the same familiar charm and beloved abilities, but now with a smoother rotation and several new, fun talent combinations to explore.
The Guardian community eagerly awaits the reveal of the new Hero talent lines and the Season 1 tier set.
Hopefully they continue making great and positive changes in the same direction going forward.
