Mythic+ Participation Plummets in S3 Week 9 as Legion Remix Explodes in Popularity

The ninth week of Mythic+ in this season is over, and Nightstalker314 is taking a look at the weekly data provided by Raider.IO. With the release of Legion Remix, most interest has shifted over to it. In addition, its version of M+ with wild scaling and seemingly endless progression is also seeing strong participation. While the focus in TWW M+ continued to shift towards high keys, Remix M+ has only just started to take off with massive amounts of lower keys. So, let’s look at the details.

Weekly Total Run Performance Compared To Other Seasons

As expected, the weekly numbers fell off sharply. Given that the season has been going on for a while, and most players have reached their goals, this drop-off is not surprising. 48.26% fewer runs for the four regular regions makes this the biggest single decline of any seasons so far. In China, the drop-off was a bit smaller (-45.79%), bringing the global week-by-week decrease to 47.05%.

Week 10 so far is seeing slightly fewer runs. But the trend on Chinese servers is shifting much more strongly. For week 9, the region finally made it past 50% of global numbers for the first time. But that might be reversed in week 10. And we have yet to see how week 11 with uncapped crests and item vendors will play out.

Total Runs Across All Dungeons

The split widened a bit since the previous week. A lot of people just went for a quick Eco-Dome to secure the vault loot. The order only slightly shifted within the lower half. The drop-off for the overall success rate to 84.56% is quite consistent. It is a combination of the worst rotating affix and less activity of ambitious players who swapped over to grind Remix.

Eco-Dome (90.69%) is once again leading, slightly ahead of Gambit (90.16%). Streets of Wonder (88.02%) and Halls (85.69%) are still comfortably ahead of the lower half. Dawnbreaker (82.70%) and Priory (80.24%) managed to stay above 80%, with the latter once again having rough trash pulls due to the Ascendant affix. Floodgate (79.53%) is close behind, while Ara-Kara (76.30%) continues to beg for missing nerfs.

Split Across All Key Levels

85.64% of all keys were done at level 10 and higher. But the split in this key range has drastically shifted towards the higher end. 48.05% of all keys were already +12 and higher, while more than half of those (24.84% of the total) were done on +12 alone. Lower Key levels saw a lot less participation across the board, with 58% to 67% fewer completed runs. The only gains in absolute numbers happened at key level 18 and above. We even saw the first +22s being timed.

Success rates dropped by up to 7.79 percentage points for lower keys. A combination of bad affixes and lack of experienced alts pushing through those levels might be the main reason. The only significant improvement happened for key level 12 (+3.57 percentage points), where players are unlocking higher Myth track upgrades.

Legion Remix Dungeon Split

With 9 instead of 8 dungeons, we still see a quite even split across all of them. The popularity is likely due to short run times (Maw of Souls) and familiarity. Halls of Valor, Darkheart Thicket, Neltharion’s Lair, and Black Rook Hold were already part of the dungeon rotation during DF seasons. Court of Stars is probably less favored because of its annoying RP section. And Vault of the Wardens involves a lot of running and waiting for elevators compared to the pace of the other dungeons.

In terms of total numbers, Remix hadn’t reached the metrics of TWW S3 yet. Just 46.46% of the week 9 numbers. Success rates between 95.92% and 99.85% are astonishing compared to TWW. And the outliers are likely tied to a lack of knowledge for dungeons that haven’t been relevant in almost 7 years, or mechanics that are punishing even on lower levels.

Mythic+ Dungeon Times data by RaiderIO

Comparing the pace between TWW S3 and Remix is night and day. TWW dungeons in week 9 saw 50% of their runs being done 11.02% to 25.72% below the timer. In Remix, this cut-off ranges between 50.28% to 81.09% below the timer. The fastest Arcway run was done in 3.48% of the official timer.

Legion Remix Key Level Split

The key level split is showing the extreme ladder that players have to climb. From +2 to +26, it is almost a guaranteed +3 finish for most keys. During the first week, most players focused on pushing their key levels. The slight bumps at 20, 30, and 40 represent the unlocks for portals, cloaks, and the title. Success rates didn’t drop below 90% until late into the level 30s.

This distribution will likely shift over the next few weeks. And looking at the runs for week 10 so far, level 100 doesn’t seem like a real limit for some teams. Though there seems to be evidence for exploiting the insane power grind.

Conclusion and Week 10 Forecast

For week 9, Remix did not manage to surpass the metrics of TWW. But that might shift in a major way once the average players progress within the power grind. Overall runs are more than twice as fast, which makes for higher total numbers in the same timeframe. With the start of Early Access for Fellowship and full access to Turbo Boost in week 11, developers should ensure that TWW M+ sees some final tuning.

As of this writing, 120 hours after the US reset, hourly numbers are clearly shifting towards Legion Remix. EU and US servers are only seeing slight decreases of 1.4% to 6.8% while Chinese players are clearly shifting over towards Remix. Their TWW metrics have gone down by 16% so far. And the total runs in Remix in week 10 so far have already surpassed the numbers of week 9. Next week’s breakdown should be quite interesting.
