Players Finally Found a Way to Silence LFG Spammers But Midnight Could Break It

Thanks to a very popular add-on, Reddit user datascientist933633 has discovered a way to filter out spammers in Mythic+.

An ongoing issue for several expansions, spammers will flood the group finder advertising services in exchange for real money transfers. Better known by its initialism RMT, these services and spammers are in direct violation of Blizzard’s Terms of Service. No matter how much you report these accounts, they always find a way to advertise in the group finder. Below is a screenshot of me looking for a 12 key without filters.

Using Premade Group Filter Add-on Can Get Rid of All of Them

If you’re someone who likes to use add-ons, the Premade Groups Filter add-on will let you ignore almost all of the spammers, by opening the advanced filter and adding “not voice” into the filter. This will remove the vast majority of spammers and clear up those group finders, making finding a key much easier. Check out the screenshot taken on the reddit post above to see how it works in action.

Baseline Filter Works, But More Restricted

Without needing add-ons, the in-game filter has the tools to also limit how many spammers you see, but does have some limits on how effective it is.

Using the in-game filter, you can open it up and set the Minimum Mythic+ Rating to 1. This filter will remove almost all of the spammers, since they don’t have ratings. An unfortunate consequence of using the in-game filter this way is that any new players or new characters looking to get score for the first time will be filtered out. You’ll be getting rid of spammers, but also some players will be removed from your group finder, meaning it’s not a perfect solution.

The second side-effect is that Legion Remix doesn’t have Mythic+ score, making the in-game filter useless for this problem. Players will have to manually report players to get rid of them in the group finder without add-ons.

Blizzard Needs Solutions Going into Midnight

As we get closer to the launch of World of Warcraft: Midnight and the potential removal of add-on support with it, solutions to the spammer problem in the group finder has to be addressed by Blizzard. Players have long noticed the quality of customer support has deteriorated since Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, that has come with four rounds of layoffs and the implementation of AI believed to be the leading cause.

Paired with a lack of transparency, it’s no surprise players are upset over the constant spam in the group finder. The last public numbers of accounts banned came in December 2023, and because this is a clear and visible violation of the ToS, we aren’t shocked players have found work arounds to remove them. Without updates to either customer support or more in-game tools, it’s unlikely we see real solutions to this problem.

Do you think we’ll see an improvement heading into Midnight as the beta testing begins, or will the problem only get worse?
