Something Feels Off in Arathi—Why WoW’s Latest Questline Has Players Divided

Legacy of Arathor - Arathi Highlands - Faerin and Danath

I really enjoyed the new campaign questline with Faerin and Danath, but it looks like I am in the minority. Patch 11.1.7 just went live, and one of its main story arcs is already stirring up a major debate WoW players. A growing Reddit thread is now packed with criticism about how the writing handles Danath, the Mag’har, and the sudden push for peace:

The Danath We Get Feels Nothing Like the One We Knew

One of the biggest complaints is about Danath Trollbane himself. For those who remember the older games and books, Danath was a hardened warrior who oversaw internment camps and led the charge against the Orcs in the Second War. In the new story, however, he is suddenly advocating for tolerance and forgiveness, without any real buildup or internal conflict.

A lot of players feel this is a total 180 from his original character, like the writers are softening him without showing the actual process or development.

“The Sons of Lothar have always stood for tolerance and mercy.”
“My Guy, Danath, you were in charge of internment camps… Did the writers play the games?”

Character development is not the issue – it just feels rushed. There is no scene where Danath reflects on his past or struggles with his decisions. He just flips a switch and becomes a peace advocate, which left a lot of people scratching their heads.

The Way the Conflict Gets Resolved

The whole questline is built around trying to make peace between the factions, but for a lot of players, it just feels a bit too easy. Decades of war and bad blood ending in a quick handshake is a bit hard to buy. The idea behind it is nice, sure… but it probably needed more time to breathe.

A few players also noted that the old wars and internment camps barely get mentioned. That kind of missing context makes the sudden tone change feel a little weird if you have been following the lore for a while.

Apparently, Faerin Is Seen as Naive

Faerin Lothar, the new main Alliance NPC in this storyline, is also receiving quite a bit of criticism. She is clearly meant to represent the hope for peace, but players argue that she comes across as too idealistic or even preachy. She pushes for reconciliation with the Mag’har orcs but never really addresses what happened in the past, or why there is still tension.

However, keep in mind that this is not part of a major campaign or expansion setup. It is just a short patch story. Even so, it caught attention. Some players like the more peaceful direction. But most are still wondering why Danath suddenly sounds more like a diplomat than a veteran general.

In the end, it is less about being angry and more about that disconnect. The real issue is how unfamiliar these characters now feel. It is good to see people still this invested, though. After all these years, players still (and hopefully always will) care about how the story is told.
