Transmog Freedom is Finally Here in Midnight

World of Warcraft: Midnight is bringing changes to the Transmogrification system! We’re going to take an in-depth look at all of the new features, which include custom sets, outfit slots and situations.

What is a Custom Set?

A custom set with the new system is the same as “outfits” in retail, just under a new name. You’ll be able to make a transmog and save it as a new custom set. These cost no gold to make, don’t require an outfit slot, and you can make as many as you’d like. Simply make your transmog, and then save it as a new custom set by giving it a name. After making a new set, you can rename it, view it in the dressing room, or replace them with your current appearance if you make something better.

Any outfits you have on retail now carry over into Midnight and be found under this tab.

What is an Outfit Slot?

Outfit Slots are your transmogs that your character can wear. You start with two slots for free, and can buy up to 20 slots. After you have made a custom set, or just have a full gear set that you like, you can save it to an outfit Slot. It costs 5,700 gold to save a full outfit to one of the slots, but you’re free to switch between outfits at no cost. The Outfit Slots can also be added to your action bars, meaning you don’t even need to be at a transmogrifier to switch between them.

One change players will notice is that you won’t have to pay again for a piece when you acquire new gear. Transmogs with this system are saved in the slot, and not the specific piece, meaning as you’re collecting new gear your transmog won’t change.

We’ve previously covered the very high costs to unlock all 20, and that the slots are NOT unlocked account-wide. Blizzard announced in a blue post that this will no longer be the case.

What Else is New?

Besides a new UI, there’s a tab called Situations which is the main feature of this new system. Situations are assigned to each outfit slot and will change your transmog automatically when the situation is met.

There’s up to five types of situations in which you can assign a transmog to change automatically. They are organized by Locations, Movement, Specializations, Equipment Sets, and Racial Forms.

Locations covers both open world content and instanced content. Areas like housing, rest areas, dungeons, and battlegrounds.

Movement covers both mounted and unmounted transmogs.

Specializations allows us to select a transmog depending on our specialization, or even particular talent builds.

Equipment Sets will allow us to have a particular transmog for certain equipment sets, which are created under the Equipment Manager in the Character Info tab.

Racial Forms are exclusive to Worgen and Dracthyr’s, but they allow each form to have a different transmog.
