Which Specs Everyone Is Playing in Mythic+ This Season: A New Favorite

Starym's Avatar by Starym

We’re back to take a look at what the most popular specs in Mythic+ are! We see a seismic shift from Season 2, as Retribution isn’t at the top! There’s a lot more changes, as we look at overall popularity, by key, as well as group composition popularity, so let’s dive in. If you’re more interested in the actual completion rates and log rankings, head on over here.

The Data

The data used in this article comes from Raider.IO‘s excellent analytics tools, taking into account all Mythic+ runs across all levels of play. The data is focused on this past reset and not on the season as a whole.

The Most Popular Specs in Mythic+

Retribution is no more! Well, it dropped two spots, but for the most popular spec in WoW of all time, that’s huge! We also see big differences in the top 3 numbers, with Frost DK ahead by a large margin from Elemental. And by a large margin, I mean 0.5% down from Frost’s 6.9%, but that’s pretty solid for these charts. Ret is quite a bit further down, a whole 1% in fact.

We then have the most popular tank and healer, with Vengeance remaining on top from Season 2. We do see a change in the top healer, however, as Resto Druid takes over from Discipline, but the Priest didn’t go too far. Marksmanship and Arcane also hold on very well from Season 2, grabbing the 4th and 5th DPS spots. The tanks seem much closer together this season, though, as the two Prots are very close together and not that far away from Vengeance, less than 1%.

The breakdown by key level is a bit harder to read, but we see a solid diversity of specs even in the highest keys (18s so far). The meta hasn’t solidified quite yet, so players are experimenting, as we basically only saw 5-6 specs in the very top keys by the end of Season 2, and we have 13 in the top key here!

And here’s the full numbers, with actual runs included! We can see a whoole lot of runs done a swell, with the top specs getting around 9 times more runs than around the end of Season 2.

Group Composition Popularity

The most played group in the first two weeks is Prot Warrior, Resto Shaman, Frost DK, Marksmanship, and, well, Ret Paladin. Unlike the end of Season 2, however, there are three comps very close together, with Vengeance grabbing the tank slot in the second and third, Resto Druid the healer slot in the third, but the DPS remains exactly the same. This is already smelling of a bit of a DPS meta, but a lot of players are still missing 4-set bonuses and a lot of gear, so we’ll see how it develops. And then there’s the inevitable class tuning, of course.
