Why Mythic+ Participation Is Dropping in Week 15—Even With Big Upgrades

The fifteenth week of Mythic+ in this season is over and once again Nightstalker314 is taking a look at the data provided by Raider.IO.

The season is nearing its end. With the belt from Overcharged Delves, players get one last big gear upgrade this patch cycle. But its final form is timegated once again So while many are grinding rewards outside Mythic+, motivation is dwindling and participation numbers show it. Let’s look at the details.

Weekly Total Run Performance Compared To Other Seasons

The drop-off rate from week to week is still decent with a loss of 12.68% this time. The only season performing better after 15 weeks is DF S1. And for that point in time we know that more and more returning players kept the numbers afloat. The previous season had its issues keeping players around for the final stretch. So far TWW S2 is performing better. But the current waiting period for the belt upgrades is a bit of a drought. And for week 16 we also had longer maintenance due to the 11.1.7 patch release. On top of that a lot of high end players will spend the next few weeks on PTR. Be it for general class testing or the staggered dungeon tests.

Total Runs Across All Dungeons

The most and least favored dungeons are still really close to each other. A grouping we haven’t seen as consistent as this in any season before. Their order has been shifting a bit lately. And by now the combination of short runtime and travel time is forming a clear pattern. Since the dinar vendors are up the focus seems to be on quick vault slots. The in time percentage went up slightly in week 15. With 84.93% we are around the long term average for farm weeks.

Darkflame Cleft (91.09%) remains undefeated above 90% as the easiest dungeon for the entire season. The MOTHERLODE is once again leading the rest with 85.88%. Priory (85.32%) is close behind and benefiting from an affix combination that didn’t impact its trash pulls as much. The Rookery is just above the average with 84.97%. Operation Floodgate (84.18%) and Cinderbrew Meadery (83.64%) are leading the lower half. Mechagon (82.32%) as well as Theater of Pain (81.84%) suffer from the Tyrannical affix once more. The latter is a good example for the developers’ decision to add better respawn points in 11.2.

Split Across All Key Levels

Once again 70% of all runs were completed at key level 10 and higher. The general drop-off in total runs is showing the most within the higher key level range. From 14 to 18 players see less of a reason to push rating as long as the new belt isn’t at the highest item level. Only key level 19 and higher are showing increased participation.

Key levels below 12 benefited from the better affix combination last week. The impact of Tyrannical at level 7 is still quite substantial. A drop of 7.5 percentage points from 6 to 7 shows how rough the tuning for these alternating affixes still is. So far the dev team hasn’t addressed this pain point within the key level progression.

Conclusion And Early Numbers For Week 16

For now players are waiting for their final chance to push rating during the last weeks of the season. The announcement of 11.2 is adding a bit of urgency on one hand. On the other the timegating for the belt is delaying these efforts into the final weeks of the patch cycle.

As of this writing the hourly numbers for week 16 are more than 40% behind week 15. But this is heavily impacted by long maintenance. In addition players are active in delves, timewalking and the freshly updated PTR. We have yet to see how those numbers catch up towards the end of the ID.
