Warcraft 3 Patch 3.0 at BlizzCon? The Clues Are Piling Up

Blizzard seems to be focusing on its legacy game lineup at this year’s BlizzCon, and Warcraft 3 is no exception, at least according to some clear indicators. First a suspicious tweet about active development on Blizzard’s internal servers, then a massive Warcraft 3 tournament announcement for right after BlizzCon – we take a closer look at the current state of affairs.

The Current Warcraft 3 Rumor

Community dataminer Stiven suggested on X that Warcraft 3 is in active development and could be showcased at BlizzCon. Obviously, this post sparked speculation about a potential second major update for Warcraft 3 Reforged after Version 2.0.

Although w3d, the internal development branch, has only received a minor public release upgrade, multiple sources have corroborated the claim that Patch 3.0 is in active internal development.

The Warcraft 3 Rebirth Invitational

Adding to the rumors, Grubby, one of Warcraft’s most well-known players, has announced the Warcraft 3 Rebirth Invitational, which is taking place on September 14 and 15, so immediately after BlizzCon.

The name, the timing, the official Blizzard sponsorship, the massive $10,000 prize pool – everything lines up. In his announcement, Grubby also mentions a “special twist”, which could be interpreted as a new and unexpected way to play the game.

Another Chance for Reforged?

Back in November 2024, Patch 2.0 introduced a major version update for Warcraft 3 Reforged by adding Classic HD assets as well as graphical and interface improvements. How far could Blizzard go with Patch 3.0? More quality-of-life upgrades? New campaigns? A new race, even? Even after the well-received Patch 2.0, Blizzard still has a lot to make up for when it comes to Warcraft 3’s remaster – and a full Patch 3.0 announcement would certainly help.
