A Week Into the Tower, One Class Is Clearly Ahead

Jaym0 Avatar by Jaym0

With Tower leaderboards finally live in Diablo 4, it is now easy to catch up on who is sitting at the very top, without having to use an external website for Pit Rankings. But after the first full week, the more interesting question is not who is first, but how far each class can realistically push.

Looking at the current Tower rankings across all classes, a clear pattern is already starting to form, and it says a lot about the game’s meta and overall balance.

Paladin Is Playing a Different Game

There is no other way to say this, but Paladin is miles ahead. It is not really a surprise, given that the class is still in early access for those who pre-ordered the upcoming Lord of Hatred expansion, and it is probably not as balanced as the old classes. However, the week one Tower rankings really show how far ahead it is.

  • Rank 1 Paladin: Tier 139 (8:58)
  • Rank 10 Paladin: Tier 136 (9:04)

That alone puts Paladin roughly 10 to 20 tiers above every other class, and it is not just a single player. Even Paladin players at the lower end of the top 10 are clearing tiers that other classes simply are not reaching yet.

As mentioned, this gap is likely coming from different factors:

  • Paladin is new and heavily played this season
  • Early access balance is clearly still off
  • The class scales extremely well in Tower content
  • More players pushing means more optimization happening faster as players try to beat other players more

Whatever the reason, the result is the same: Paladin currently sits in a tier of its own.

Everyone Else Is Surprisingly Close

Once Paladin is removed from the equation, the rest of the classes are actually much more grouped than you might expect. We would have thought that some classes would still be miles ahead, but the old classes do seem quite balanced this season, at least when we look only at the first week’s Tower rankings. Of course, since the mode was dropped mid-season and many players had already stopped playing, it most likely does not include everyone. We will have to see if next season, when players can rank directly from the beginning.

Here is how the top ten currently looks:

  • Barbarian: Tier 127 (Rank 1), Tier 124 (Rank 10)
  • Rogue: Tier 125 → 119
  • Druid: Tier 123 → 117
  • Spiritborn: Tier 122 → 118
  • Sorcerer: Tier 120 → 117
  • Necromancer: Tier 119 → 114

Outside of Paladin, most classes are separated by single-digit tier differences, suggesting that right now, classes are fairly balanced overall, or scale similarly in the Tower specifically.

Spiritborn’s Struggle Is Interesting

One of the more surprising results for us is Spiritborn.

Despite being rated high in tier lists since its release, Spiritborn currently tops out lower than Rogue, Druid, and Barbarian in Tower progression. That could mean a few things:

  • The class does not scale as well in Tower specifically
  • Fewer players are actively pushing high tiers with it
  • Optimal Tower builds have not fully surfaced yet

Although it is not necessarily a long-term issue, it is definitely something to watch as the season goes by.

Group Leaderboards Do Not Tell Us Much (Yet)

Tower also includes leaderboards for groups, but right now, they are less useful.

Group play introduces too many variables, like coordination, class stacking, which classes are in the party, etc, and it makes it harder to read anything in a meaningful way. For now, solo rankings give a much better picture of where each class actually stands.

The Future of the Tower

If week one is anything to go by, Tower leaderboards are not going to be about bragging rights yet.

Paladin’s dominance is hard to ignore, and if this trend continues, it is very likely to be adjusted sooner rather than later. Meanwhile, the rest of the classes appear relatively close, with only minor separation at the top end.

We have to keep in mind that the Tower is still in beta and will evolve over time. If any mechanic or content is changed, it could also change how classes rank there. On top of that, some builds just do overall better in such content, so it also depends on what the top players are actively playing.

Once things like exclusive rewards are added, this will also push more players to try their luck, and rankings might look very different when the number of participating players is higher!
