Diablo 4 introduces a small but important change in Season 12 that could be very frustrating for certain specific builds.
Blizzard added a new monster affix called Sapper. Any enemy that has this Affix will now drain your resource during the fight. That may not sound like much at first, but for many Diablo 4 builds, resource is what keeps abilities running. If your resource is constantly drained by enemies, your character might have to rely on basic attack until your resource recovers.
2.6.0 Build #70982 (All Platforms)—March 11, 2026
Combat
- A new monster affix has been added. The Sapper Affix causes affected enemies to drain the your resource.
Resource Drain Is Often Unpopular
Resource drain mechanics tend to be controversial in ARPGs because they do not just make enemies stronger, but they also temporarily disable what your build is meant to do. If you are playing something like a Sorcerer, for example, running out of resources can mean being stuck throwing weak basic attacks while waiting to cast your actual abilities again.
Players of other ARPGs have seen similar mechanics before. Path of Exile 2, for instance, features enemies that can drain player resources, and those encounters have a reputation for being particularly annoying for builds that rely heavily on mana.
How Strong Is the Sapper Affix?
As of this moment, Blizzard has not shared a lot of details about how much the Sapper affix drains resources, so it is unclear how it will really work in-game.
If the effect is small, it may just add some variety to monster encounters. But if the drain is strong enough, players running resource-heavy builds could end up in some particularly hard fights when these enemies show up.
Either way, Season 12 launches soon, so it probably will not take long for players to find out how disruptive the new affix really is.
