Rod Fergusson, former general manager of Diablo 4 and longtime leader of Blizzard’s Diablo franchise, has announced he left Blizzard. The move came as a surprise earlier this month, and left players wondering about his next step.
Now, Fergusson has confirmed he is returning to 2K as the new head of the Bioshock Franchise. He will lead Cloud Chamber, the studio developing the next Bioshock title. On top of that, he will oversee next expansions, and will be included in the development of the Netflix adaptation.
He announced it on Twitter/X:
“Would you kindly allow me to share some news? Some of you guessed it, I’m returning to 2K to lead a series that means a lot to me as the new Head of the BioShock Franchise. I’ll be heading up Cloud Chamber and overseeing development of the next BioShock game, along with franchise extensions like the in-development Netflix movie.”
Bioshock’s Current Challenges
Fergusson previously worked as an executive producer on Bioshock Infinite, making this a return to a familiar territory. His comeback is happening during a difficult time for Bioshock, since Cloud Chamber faces a lot of layoffs and restructuring.
Development on the next Bioshock game started in 2018, but updates have been very small. The latest reports suggest 2K has been not very happy with the project’s progress, and the new lead will most likely have to deliver good.
Despite the challenges, Fergusson reassured players:
“I recognize the studio restructuring is a difficult time for the team. I’m deeply grateful for the work done so far, and I’m committed to building a BioShock game we’ll be proud of and that our players will love.”
No major updates are expected in the near future, but everyone is hoping Fergusson’s leadership can revive one of the most beloved franchises.
Who Takes Over Diablo 4
Blizzard has not yet announced who will step in as the new general manager or lead for Diablo 4. With the Season 10 PTR that just started, and at least one more season planned before the next expansion, the expectation is that a new lead will be named in the coming months.
Until then, the absence of a clear leader adds some uncertainty about the game’s direction moving forward. We will make sure to keep you updated as soon as more information is released!
