Rod Fergusson Steps Away from Diablo at Blizzard!
Just a few hours ago, Rod Fergusson officially announced that he is leaving Blizzard after five years as the general manager of the Diablo franchise. He joined in early 2020, stepping in during Diablo IV’s early development, and helped ship major releases like Diablo II: Resurrected, Diablo Immortal, Diablo IV, and the Vessel of Hatred expansion.
It is now up to Blizzard to fill that leadership role. No successor has been named yet, but the role is obviously a key position, so whoever steps in will greatly influence Diablo’s next chapter, especially with another Diablo 4 expansion teased for 2026.
Who Was Rod Fergusson, and What Did He Do?
Before Blizzard, Rod was known for helping ship big, known projects like Gears 5. He has long been seen as a “closer” in the industry – someone who gets games over the finish line when they need it most.
At Blizzard, he stepped in during a rough development period for Diablo and helped guide the team through launch and everything that came after. His departure now opens up a question: Who can handle that ‘pressure’ next?
What This Means for Diablo’s Future
Rod left with confidence in the team’s direction, but stepping away from a huge franchise always raises questions. Will Diablo continue its momentum under a new leader? Could this change lead to a new, different creative direction? Or will things stay mostly the same?
Rod says the team is in a good place and that things are set up for long-term success. Nevertheless, someone this known stepping away leaves some questions about what comes next, especially with more expansions and long-term support planned.

For now, Diablo IV continues on its seasonal roadmap, with another expansion expected next year. We will have to wait and see who takes the reins next.
