Some Diablo 4 players are reporting that it is way too easy to burn through real money in the in-game shop, without even realizing it. This is especially a problem if you play with controller or on consoles. A few Reddit posts came up where players go over the issue.
You can check it out here:
A $10 Mistake in One Button Press
If you are using a controller and hit the Square or X button (depending on your controller layout) too fast while claiming rewards, the game may instantly trigger a Platinum purchase instead of Favor, costing you real cash.
On the Reddit post, multiple players reported accidentally spending $10 on several cosmetics they did not necessarily want. The whole thing leaves “a bad feeling.”
Players Say It Is a “Dark Pattern”
Many players in the Reddit post accused Blizzard of using “dark patterns“. This is a typical term used to describe UI tricks designed to push players toward unwanted purchases.
A few examples players shared are:
- The game placing your cursor directly on “Buy Battle Pass” at launch.
- No confirmation screen when spending Platinum.
- Claim or reward buttons sitting right next to purchase buttons.
As one comment put it: “Absolutely despise dishonest UI choices like this. They should know better, and they do.“
This Is Not the First Time
Diablo 4’s shop and monetization have been controversial since launch. Back in Season 1, players also complained about the Battle Pass activating by accident.
Now, with Reliquaries, the problem seems worse, players are afraid of opening the menu at all.
How to Avoid Accidental Buys
Until Blizzard fixes this, here are a few ways to protect yourself:
- Unlink your payment method from your platform or store if possible. It is annoying because you will have to re-type your information every time you want to buy something, but at least it forces a pop-up, and does not instantly buy things if you missclick.
- Do not stockpile Platinum, only buy the exact amount you plan to use. This way, you are not accidentally using the rest of your platinum on stuff you do not want.
- Double-check before pressing claim. By this, we mean press slowly when you navigate in the shop, and make sure you push the proper button to claim and not buy.
- If you do get caught, submit a refund ticket to Blizzard support and mention “dark patterns.” It does not always work, but it is worth a try.
Blizzard Needs to Step Up
Players are not just annoyed about losing a few bucks, they feel tricked. With Diablo 4 still trying to win back its community, Blizzard should be making the shop safer and more transparent, not stress-inducing.
With Season 11 bringing a lot of changes to Diablo 4, hopefully the shop UI is one of them.
