<p>Every Diablo game has had a defining expansion.  Not just adding content, but fundamentally improving the game.  Diablo 4 Lord of Hatred may be looking to the past to look forward. </p>

Instead, this expansion is focused on deeper progression, improved itemization, and more meaningful endgame systems.  For the veterans out there, you might recognize the same kind of changes that helped define previous Diablo titles.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Lord of Destruction Changed Diablo 2</h2>



<p>When <em>Lord of Destruction</em> launched in 2001, Diablo 2 was popular, but the expansion took it to another level.</p>



<p><em>Lord of Destruction </em>introduced:</p>

<li>A full new Act (Act V)</li>



<li>Charms and deeper character customization</li>

<p>These are the changes that helped turn Diablo 2 into the long-lasting ARPG that players still return to today.  The expansion gave depth, more build variety, and more reasons to keep playing.  </p>



<p>More importantly, <em>Lord of Destruction</em> gave us <strong>long-term progression goals</strong>.  This became a core part of Diablo&#8217;s identity and ARPGs moving forward.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Reaper of Souls Saved Diablo 3</h2>



<p>Meanwhile, history repeated itself with <em>Reaper of Souls<strong>.</strong> </em></p>



<p>At launch, Diablo 3 struggled with several major issues such as:</p>

<p>Each Diablo expansion that reshaped its game was focused on the same core idea: deeper progression and stronger endgame systems.</p>

<p>In case you missed it, <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/news/skovos-fishing-and-warlock-gameplay-revealed-in-diablo-4/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">IGN shared another gameplay video</a> for <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/news/diablo-4-lord-of-hatred-overview/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred</a> recently, showing off fishing in Skovos for the first time, and while the activity itself is fun to watch, one detail in the footage is worth paying extra attention to.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Fishing Rewards in Lord of Hatred</h2>



<p>From what was shown, fishing seems to reward a mix of white, blue, and potentially legendary quality items. In IGN&#8217;s video, the player fishing in lava pulled out what appeared to be a legendary or unique quality drop, which already makes the activity more interesting than a simple side distraction. </p>

<p>What was also interesting is that enemies nearby during the fishing sequence did not seem to interrupt the player. Whether that is intentional protection or just how the fishing encounter was set up is not clear yet.</p>



<p>It might not sound that exciting at first, but here is where it gets interesting.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Horadric Cube Might Change Things</h2>



<p>Lord of Hatred is bringing back the Horadric Cube as a gear manipulation system. Players can use it to add affixes, remove unwanted stats, and transform items into stronger versions, including upgrading white and blue items into legendaries and potentially even uniques.</p>



<p>That changes how you look at fishing rewards entirely. What looks like vendor trash at first could actually be raw material for crafting. Whether fishing specifically feeds into the Horadric Cube in a meaningful way is not confirmed yet, but the pieces are there, and it is hard not to connect the dots.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">New Currency and Special Rewards</h2>



<p>There is also another possibility worth considering. Different fish rarities could point toward a collectible system, where each fish acts as a form of currency. White fish might give less of it, blue and higher rarity fish more. That currency could then be spent at a specific vendor in exchange for gear, cosmetics, or other rewards.</p>

<p>Either way, the fact that rewards already seem to scale depending on where or how you fish makes the system feel like it has more depth than it first appears.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">This Could Be a Bigger System Than It Looks</h2>



<p>Fishing in lava, white items potentially turning into legendary or unique items through the cube, and a minigame you can hotkey outside the emote wheel. It seems like a small, fun system at first, but it could end up being a surprisingly useful part of the endgame loop in Lord of Hatred.</p>

Fishing in Diablo 4 Might Be More Useful Than It Looks


<p>As <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/news/diablo-4-season-12-best-builds-tier-list/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Diablo 4&#8217;s Season 12</a> gets closer to its end, players are rushing to finish off remaining challenges, and one of the toughest ones is the <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/news/diablo-4-9000-killstreak-hidden-title/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">9000+ killstreak</a> needed for the &#8220;Fresh Meat&#8221; title.</p>



<p>Now, one player has shared a route that makes this significantly more manageable.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A Community Route That Really Works</h2>



<p>In a recent Reddit post, a player detailed how they managed to hit the 9001 killstreak in a single attempt after struggling in previous runs.</p>

<p>The method focuses on a Helltide in the Dry Steppes (Untamed Scarps), using a loop between:</p>



<ul>
<li>A Blood Maiden summon area</li>



<li>A nearby event zone that continuously spawns enemies</li>
</ul>



<p>The idea is simply to rotate between these two spots to keep your killstreak alive while waiting for enemies to respawn.</p>



<p>The important part of the route is the density. By repeatedly summoning the Blood Maiden using Baneful Hearts, you create constant waves of enemies, and combined with nearby events that also spawn mobs over time, this gives you just enough breathing room to maintain the streak without running out of targets.</p>



<p>It is risky, though, because if you stop too long to activate altars or get stuck or stunned or anything like that, you can instantly end your run. We also recommend not necessarily grouping up for this, or at least not killing in the same area, because you will constantly kill each other&#8217;s enemies, and you will end up canceling your killstreaks.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Mobility Is Everything</h2>



<p>The original post used a high-mobility Sorcerer build, stacking movement speed and teleport charges to move quickly between packs, but you can easily apply the idea to other classes too:</p>



<ul>
<li>You need fast movement</li>



<li>You need wide AoE damage</li>



<li>And you need to kill quickly without stopping</li>
</ul>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Extra Tips</h2>



<p>Some players in the comments suggested other builds and added a few additional tips as well:</p>

<li>Turn off crossplay to avoid other players stealing kills</li>



<li>Avoid tight or enclosed Helltide zones</li>

<p>Some players also mention shrine/spire-based strategies to lock enemy spawns, but results seem less consistent. You basically would have to activate a Hellspire or a Butcher shrine, teleport to town, and back to freeze the timer and have enemies respawn, but if anyone else interacts with the shrine in the meantime, it will not work. We also recommend you do it in a Tier you are comfortable in. You do not want to kill too fast, but you also do not want to take too long. </p>

<p><strong>The campaign picks up after the events of Vessel of Hatred</strong>. Mephisto&#8217;s influence is quietly spreading across Sanctuary, corrupting leaders and affecting events without direct confrontation. As players progress through the storyline in Skovos, they will uncover more of his plans, form alliances, and face growing threats along the way.</p>



<p>Unlike Vessel of Hatred, which expanded the world, Lord of Hatred is about control and influence rather than outright invasion.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">New Gameplay Systems</h2>



<p>Besides two new classes, a new story, and a new region, Lord of Hatred also includes a ton of gameplay and endgame system changes:</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">War Plans</h3>

<p>War Plans let players <strong>build a structured path of five endgame activities</strong>. Instead of jumping randomly between content, you choose the order and apply modifiers that change how each activity behaves, including enemies, rewards, and mechanics. Modifiers can even carry over from one activity into the next.</p>



<p>It turns endgame into progression planning rather than repetition.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Echoing Hatred</h3>



<p><strong>Echoing Hatred is a rare escalating challenge event </strong>triggered by a special drop. Each run features changing enemies, increasing difficulty, and scaling rewards. It is designed as a survival test for long-term builds rather than quick burst farming.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The Horadric Cube</h3>

<p>The Horadric Cube returns as a gear manipulation system. Players can add affixes, change or remove stats, and transform items into stronger versions. The goal is to give <strong>more control over gear progression</strong> instead of relying entirely on drops.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Talismans and Charms</h3>



<p><strong>Set bonuses</strong> also return, but this time through a combination of Charms and Talismans. Charms are placed into a Talisman, and combining matching ones activates bonuses. This keeps build identity without locking you into specific gear slots.</p>

<p>Lord of Hatred also introduces<strong> loot filters, a skill tree overhaul, a level cap increase to Level 70, and fishing </strong>as a side activity.<strong> </strong></p>



<p>The new skill tree changes are especially interesting, as they now look quite different from what players were used to. Key passives are gone, and many new branches have been added. Skills have many more customization options, not just in terms of numbers and power, but also visually. </p>

<p>Diablo 4 has undergone dozens upon dozens of reworks to its gameplay systems since launch. Many of which were for the better. As the game continues to grow, plus with Lord of Hatred on the horizon, there are still many parts of Diablo 4 that need reworks.</p>

Most players have already forgotten about changes like the one to mounts, which allowed them to charge through barricades. </p>



<p>But not every rework has been met with positivity. The most often discussed one is the Battle Pass, which many players <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/news/diablo-4-battle-pass-model-questioned/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">found to be a massive downgrade</a>. But change requires feedback, so which system would you want to see reworked?</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Reworks Does Diablo 4 Need?</h2>

<p>There have already been <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/news/why-diablo-4-is-redesigning-monsters-and-defenses-in-season-11/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reworks to the basic combat</a> and AI of enemies, and Lord of Hatred is bringing new endgame crafting systems with the return of the <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/news/the-horadric-cube-could-finally-fix-diablo-4s-endgame/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Horadric Cube</a> and the <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/news/massive-skill-tree-rework-coming-in-diablo-4-lord-of-hatred/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">full Skill Tree rework</a>. But there are still many changes players have been asking for.</p>



<p>One such rework we <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/news/diablo-4-customization-criticism-grows-after-12-seasons/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">recently highlighted was the armor dye system</a>, and the battle pass armors are often another huge request. </p>



<p>PVP has also been completely left in the dust, and there&#8217;s little incentive to participate in it, unless you don&#8217;t have some of the cosmetic unlocks. But as D4&#8217;s power scaling grows, PvP will become increasingly more difficult to find reason or fairness to partake in.</p>



<p>Returning events would also value some rework. Seemingly, every time that a season has a few months left, the same few events will rotate back in. <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/news/dont-miss-diablo-4s-gift-of-the-tree-event-this-week/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Gift of the Tree</a> &amp; March of the Goblins, &amp; Mother&#8217;s Blessing are the most common, which do offer meaningful catch-up systems, but are often not exciting enough to have most players return.</p>

<p>Diablo 4 <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/news/diablo-4-lord-of-hatred-first-12-minutes-gameplay/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">fans got another treat</a> earlier today as IGN continues its coverage for Lord of Hatred with a new video that gives players a much closer look at one of its biggest additions: the new Skovos region.</p>



<p>In this newly released 21-minute gameplay video, we get to see the exploration of the zone for the first time.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">New Island Region to Explore</h2>



<p>Unlike the base game&#8217;s mainland, <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/news/first-look-skovos-new-zone-expansion-diablo-4/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Skovos</a> is made up of multiple islands located right behind Nahantu on the world map. From what is shown in the footage, the region comes with a lot of content:</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Warlock Gameplay and Strongholds</h2>



<p>The video is played using the <strong>new Warlock class</strong>, which gives us yet another look at the new class and its abilities in action. One of the highlights is the Saltwind Stronghold, where the player fights off waves of enemies before taking on a boss called The Fathomless One, with tentacles erupting from the ground during the encounter.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Finally, Fishing</h2>



<p>Probably the most unexpected part is the first look at fishing. You can cast a line directly from the emote wheel when near water, triggering a small minigame where timing seems to matter. Once successful, the fish just drops next to your character.</p>



<p>And somehow it does not stop there. <strong>You can apparently fish in lava, too</strong>. Yes. Lava.</p>

<p>Skovos looks pretty much similar to Diablo 4&#8217;s current open-world formula, just with a new setting and a few extra systems on top. In any case, there is a lot of new content waiting for players when <strong>Lord of Hatred launches on April 28</strong>.</p>

Skovos, Fishing, and Warlock Gameplay Revealed in Diablo 4


<p>Blizzard just dropped a new animated short for <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Diablo 4</a>, and like the <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/news/diablo-4s-new-short-story-shows-neyrelle-at-her-lowest-point/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">previous one centered on Neyrelle</a>, this one also has a really dark atmosphere and a lot of foreshadowing.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A Queen Haunted by What Is Coming</h2>



<p>The short is narrated once again by the Oracle Queen.</p>



<p>Adreona is a warrior who fought for years to bring peace to her people, and by the time the story takes place, she is no longer just a fighter, but she is a respected and admired Queen. But that peace does not last, at least not in her mind.</p>



<p>What follows is less a battle and more a psychological collapse. Adreona dreams of an incoming threat with ships approaching under darkness, and convinces herself that war is inevitable. Acting on that fear, she orders a preemptive strike, and the result is catastrophic. Instead of defending her kingdom, she ends up destroying it, because the supposed enemy turns out to be &#8220;harmless&#8221;, and her own people pay the price for her decision. By the end of the vision, her legacy is shattered, her people curse her name, and she falls, unable to even defend herself anymore.</p>

<p>She eventually wakes up, safe in her bed, with no war, no destruction, and just relief that it was all a nightmare. But the story does not end there because a crow appears at her window, watching her in silence, and the tone makes it pretty clear: this is not just a dream. It is a warning.</p>



<p>Like the previous short, this is not directly about gameplay or mechanics, but it basically sets the tone for what is coming, especially with <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/news/diablo-4-mephisto-lore-before-lord-of-hatred/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mephisto&#8217;s influence</a> looming in the background.</p>



<p>You will have to be careful, because the real threat is not always obvious, and sometimes, it comes from within.</p>

Diablo 4 Teases a Dark Future for Lord of Hatred


<p>As <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/news/diablo-4-paragon-300-bloodstained-hordes-xp-farm/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Diablo 4</a> heads toward its next big expansion, <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/news/diablo-4s-female-warlock-reveal-has-players-asking-for-more-customization/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lord of Hatred</a>, not everyone is feeling confident about their class, especially <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/rogue/builds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rogue players</a>.</p>



<p><a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/diablo4/comments/1sgf583/top_50_rogue_cant_clear_bloodsoaked_lair_bosses/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=web3x&amp;utm_name=web3xcss&amp;utm_term=1&amp;utm_content=share_button" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Over on Reddit</a>, one player shared their frustration with the current state of Rogue and its incapacity of clearing as much content as other classes. Despite pushing a level 105 tower, they still could not clear Bloodsoaked Lair bosses solo, saying their only real option was grouping with stronger classes like <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/paladin/builds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Paladin</a>.</p>



<p>And when you look at the comments, they are clearly not alone.</p>



<p>Across the thread, multiple players have the same opinion: Rogue just is not in a great spot right now. Some longtime mains say they have already moved on to other classes this season, with <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/sorcerer/builds/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sorcerer</a> and Paladin in particular being mentioned as significantly stronger and easier to push with.</p>



<p>One player summed it up really well by saying that &#8220;Rogues haven&#8217;t been hot for a minute.&#8221;And as a Rogue main, we have to agree.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A One-Build Problem?</h2>



<p>What makes things worse is not just the difficulty but the lack of flexibility when it comes to the Rogue.</p>



<p>Most classes have multiple viable builds for endgame content, but Rogue players keep pointing to a much smaller meta. Right now, even <a class="icy-gtnbrg-link" href="#"><span class="icy-gtnbrg-tooltip"><img decoding="async" data-tooltip-name="Heartseeker" class="icy-gtnbrg-tooltip-img" src="https://static.icy-veins.com/wp/static/d4/latest/images/icons/2DUI_Skills_Rogue_35.webp" alt="Heartseeker"><span class="tooltip-spell-name d4-text">Heartseeker</span></span></a> and <a class="icy-gtnbrg-link" href="#"><span class="icy-gtnbrg-tooltip"><img decoding="async" data-tooltip-name="Death Trap" class="icy-gtnbrg-tooltip-img" src="https://static.icy-veins.com/wp/static/d4/latest/images/icons/2DUI_Skills_Rogue_237.webp" alt="Death Trap"><span class="tooltip-spell-name d4-text">Death Trap</span></span></a> have a hard time competing with other classes&#8217; top builds. The so-called &#8220;Orphan Maker&#8221; build is often mentioned as the only way to even attempt top-tier bosses.</p>



<p>Some players claim they can make it work, but many others say that even optimized versions of these builds still fall short, especially compared to how comfortably other classes can clear the same content.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">More Effort, Less Reward</h2>



<p>This leads to another recurring complaint, which is the amount of investment required.</p>



<p>Rogue often needs significantly more optimization, gear, and execution just to reach the same level of performance that other classes achieve much more easily. Survivability also comes up a lot, with some builds struggling to stay alive even when their damage is decent on paper.</p>



<p>That gap becomes especially noticeable in content like Bloodsoaked bosses, since they are currently much harder to beat than the usual content. And when you compare to Sorcerer or Paladin who just breathe through things with not that much investment&#8230; the problem is even more visible.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Will the Expansion Fix It?</h2>



<p>The current balance issues might just be due to <a href="https://www.icy-veins.com/d4/news/diablo-4-season-12-best-builds-tier-list/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Season 12</a> being shorter and less of a priority, with Blizzard likely focusing more on the upcoming expansion. The expectation is that Lord of Hatred will bring a lot of rebalancing across all classes.</p>



<p>And regarding Rogue, expectations are pretty high because if Rogue still ends up lagging behind after a full expansion overhaul, new skill trees, and more, it is going to be a lot harder for players to give Blizzard the benefit of the doubt.</p>



<p>Right now, Rogue is not unplayable, but it is clearly not where many players want it to be, and with other classes offering better progression and more build variety, it is not surprising to see even dedicated Rogue mains switching until it feels better.</p>
