Blizzard has released a new official Diablo 4 video titled “The Story So Far”, which provides a full recap of the main events leading into the upcoming Lord of Hatred expansion. As the title suggests, the video contains heavy story spoilers and is clearly made for players who simply want to refresh their memory on where things currently stand, or for new players wanting to catch up on what has happened in Diablo 4 so far before heading into the next expansion.
The recap is narrated by Lorath and walks through the entire journey from Lilith’s return to Mephisto’s escape, setting the stage for what comes next.
Note: This page includes story spoilers for Diablo 4 and Vessel of Hatred, so it is best watched after finishing the full campaign.
From Lilith to Mephisto
The video starts with the creation of Sanctuary by Lilith and Inarius and quickly moves into Lilith’s plan to reshape humanity. Rather than saving Sanctuary, her goal was to empower it by any means necessary, including consuming her father, Mephisto, the Lord of Hatred.
To stop her, the Wanderer (this is you, the player) forms an uneasy bond with Lilith and later an even more dangerous bargain with Mephisto himself. Although Lilith is ultimately defeated, her warning about what comes next hangs over the entire ending.
Neyrelle’s Choice and Its Consequences
After Lilith’s death, Neyrelle traps Mephisto inside a Soulstone and travels away alone to bury him for good. That decision comes at a cost. Mephisto’s corruption begins to take hold, forcing the player (the Wanderer) to intervene once again.
Our journey with Neyrelle then leads us to the tomb of Akarat, Sanctuary’s holy prophet. Although we defeat Mephisto’s Herald, Mephisto himself escapes by possessing Akarat’s body.
The Lord of Hatred Walks Sanctuary
The video ends on a rather grim note. Mephisto now walks Sanctuary as a false prophet, spreading corruption under the guise of salvation. With no time to rest, the fight continues, directly setting up the events of the Lord of Hatred expansion.
For long-time Diablo fans, this approach is nothing new. The Greater Evils have always relied on deception, cult worship, and false promises to control humanity. Mephisto in particular has manipulated belief systems before, most notably through the Order of the Triune during the Sin War and his long-running conflict with Inarius over the fate of Sanctuary.
