Diablo 4 players have been destroying the Echo of Lilith every season since the game launched, but it seems we haven’t been thorough enough, because Diablo 4 Associate Game Director Zaven Haroutunian has now confirmed, ‘she’s back.’
In an IGN exclusive video focused on the story in Lord of Hatred, Haroutunian didn’t give away any specific plot details, saying, ‘we’ll kind of leave that a little bit of a mystery,’ however, he did sprinkle in a number of juicy clues.
He talked about the moment near the beginning of the first act when our characters were force-fed some blood petals, saying, ‘Lilith has been in you in some way ever since that happened.’

For those who played through the Vessel of Hatred campaign, you may recall your character doubling over in pain several times and clutching their stomach. This wasn’t because you’d eaten some not-so-fresh meat from a dodgy Kurast Bazaar street vendor, but because Lilith was still inside you in some way.
This thread of the narrative had no resolution in VOH. It doesn’t take a loremaster to work out that the payoff was being saved for the climax of the Age of Hatred trilogy, and that you (yes you) will be the vessel through which Lilith returns to Sanctuary.
Comments and reactions to the video on both YouTube and Reddit show a somewhat lukewarm reaction. Players hoping to see any large-scale story reveals were left disappointed, with many big questions remaining unanswered.
This is clearly how Blizzard wants it. The breadcrumbs are scattered. The lore lovers have more than enough new content to allow them to speculate and theorize, and with April 28th fast approaching, we don’t have long to wait until we find out how this chapter of Sanctuary’s story ends … and the next one begins.
