Square Enix released Final Fantasy XIV on the Nintendo Switch 2 on Aug. 4, with many new players joining the FFXIV community. Since then, FFXIV players on the Switch 2 have been reporting the ability to modify their Au Ra horn color. A hot fix might be coming soon to address this issue, but Square Enix should consider making this a permanent feature.
How Are Switch 2 Players Changing Au Ra Horn Color?
Emergency maintenance in Patch 7.55 addressed long loading times on the Switch 2 and implemented fixes for other bugs. Introduced with this hot fix was the aforementioned ability for Switch 2 players to adjust Au Ra horn color.
This ability can be accessed through the face paint option in the character customization menu. It’s worth noting that the color change is most noticeable when the player is choosing eyebrow styles.
As Meoni in the video above pointed out, changing horn color works on all horn types and on members of both the Raen and Xaela clans. Interestingly, FFXIV players on the Switch 2 can see each other’s modified horns while players on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC cannot see modified horns on anyone.
We learned at the FFXIV Fan Festival in Berlin last month that Patch 8.1 will bring more character customization options. These include the ability to deactivate and reactivate certain features like Lalafell nose shading and Miqo’te war paint. One of these options will allow players to swap Au Ra horn styles, leading some to hope that adjustable horn color is also coming permanently.
Square Enix Has a Wonderful Opportunity

To be clear, Square Enix hasn’t officially announced the ability to change Au Ra horn color in any future patch. It’s possible that the developers failed to remove this feature from the Switch 2 version during testing. However, it’s also possible that this may merely be a bug.
Regardless, offering customizable horn colors would be a massive and easy win for Square Enix. Many Au Ra players undoubtedly have wanted to change their horn color since installing the game. Nevertheless, if Square Enix decides to fix this bug — assuming it’s an actual bug — and not make it a future feature in Evercold, then many Au Ra players might feel cheated.
Additionally, it would be nice for players to be able to choose body and face scale color and tail color. Whether this any of this comes to fruition remains a mystery. Either way, we might find out soon, when the next FFXIV Fan Festival takes place Oct. 31-Nov. 1 in Tokyo.
