New Character Creation Updates With FFXIV’s Patch 8.1

The choice is in your hands, Warriors of Light! The Final Fantasy XIV EU Fan Fest 2026 keynote unveiled more options for character creation coming in Evercold! Finally, certain playable races can soon enjoy greater freedom in how they can customize their appearance. Read on for all the changes we’ve got lined up to facilitate making your WoL unique!

What We Know From NA Fan Fest

Quick recap! Starting in Patch 8.0, the Character Creation system will receive its first round of updates. Players will have a much wider variety in colour choice for their eyes, hair, and skin tone. Additionally, freely adjust the iris size, lip glossiness, eyeshadow, and have multiple layers of face paint!

What More Is Coming?

Not too long after, there will be additional options that players can tinker with in Patch 8.1. Turn on or off certain racial features like Lalafell and Viera nose shading, and Miqo’te war paint. Also, players will be able to freely swap around their Au Ra horns! They have escaped being shackled to a particular face or eye shape! I’m happy for you Au Ra players. Definitely not looking longingly at certain Hrothgar face-locked hairstyles.

Thanks to the graphics overhaul that began in Dawntrail, the developers now have the foundation to bring about these kinds of changes. They remain committed to their promise of increasing player freedom and so we can expect further changes as Evercold progresses. Who knows? Maybe this has opened the door for different sliders and longer hairstyles? 👀

Now that we’ve had two Fan Fests with more character creation updates, it doesn’t hurt to be cautiously optimistic for more surprises from the third 2026 Fan Fest in Japan! My wild guess is that there will be more ear shape variance in the future. Floppy-eared Miqo’te, anyone? Stay tuned for more FFXIV news on Icy Veins!
