007: First Light Just Showed Us How Bond Really Plays

If you have been eager for more news on 007: First Light, you will be happy to hear that IO Interactive released a new gameplay video just yesterday. Not only does it look amazing, but there is also a lot of information regarding what kind of game it really is. All in all, it looks like this is going to be a Bond experience worth playing!

007 First Light – Rules of Spycraft

Stealth, Gadgets, and a License to Kill

The video walks through the core systems of the game, framed as MI6 briefing rules for new Double O agents. The two main pillars are stealth and preparation.

On the stealth side, blending into crowds, eavesdropping, bluffing your way past enemies, and using silent takedowns all play an important role. Bluffing is an actual mechanic that is linked to an instinct resource. It stops working against more experienced enemies, which adds some nice tension to the social stealth.

For preparation, you return to MI6 HQ between missions to gather intel, talk to familiar faces, and load up on gadgets from Q Branch. The kit looks very fun: a Q-Lens to highlight hackable objects and opportunities, a Q-Watch to hack devices and distract enemies, a Dart Phone to silently move enemies out of the way, a Smoke Pod for cover, and Flash Earbuds to stun. More gadgets unlock as you progress.

Combat seems to be all about improvisation. You can pick up enemy weapons, use the environment, switch playstyles mid-fight, and activate a Focus Mode that slows time and lets you disarm enemies or target weak points.

Progression and Live Content

There is also a training mode called Tacsim, run by a character called Dr. Selina Tan, where you complete challenges, compete on global leaderboards, and earn XP for gadget upgrades, new weapons, and outfits. IO Interactive confirmed that Tacsim will get new content added over time, which sounds like there will be a live service component to the game.

007: First Light launches on May 27.
