Blizzard Might Be Cooking a New WoW Classic Era for 2026

Classic Lead Game Designer Josh Greenfield returned to X this week to give a quick update on his role at Blizzard and some of the work he’s been focusing on.

Greenfield had a role change in recent months, officially becoming Lead Game Designer for Classic, and is no longer involved in game production. Interestingly, he also mentions his reduced role in both Mists of Pandaria Classic and Classic Anniversary realms.

Could this mean Blizzard, but also Greenfield, is working on a new version of Classic? Greenfield played a major role in Season of Discovery, creating a few of the rune mysteries and several questlines including the Corrupted Ashbringer iconCorrupted Ashbringer. His experience with Season of Discovery would bring a ton of experience to the next iteration of Classic.

In the meantime, we’ll have to wait to see what Blizzard has planned for Classic in 2026. It might be a while until we hear an announcement, with The Burning Crusade releasing February 5th on Anniversary Classic realms and Midnight releasing on live servers March 2nd.

What are you hoping to see in Classic?
