In the WoW Forever beta, Blizzard has been experimenting with giving players the right amount of experience for quests, dungeons, and enemy kills. While the experience earned from Dungeon Quests was significantly higher than in Vanilla, Blizzard recently nerfed the amount of experience granted by these quests in the latest update.
WoW Forever Beta Development Notes – Updated October 1
Quests
- Developers’ notes: We appreciate the feedback on leveling speed as we continue ongoing discussions about the Beta. As part of those discussions, we’ve decided to reduce the amount of XP granted from dungeon quests with this release. Certain quest rewards have also been recalibrated.
- Dungeon quests now reward 50% less extra experience beyond normal quest values.
With experience from Dungeon mobs being reduced as well, some players are wondering if Dungeons are even worth doing while leveling. Blizzard stated that their goal with reducing the amount of experience given for enemy kills in dungeons was to give players more of an incentive to level up in the open world, rather than sitting in dungeons, grinding all day.

Experience Gains Nerfed
While Blizzard may have had good intentions by giving players more reasons to explore the open world of Azeroth, players have also started to notice that low-level (green) enemies are also providing less experience than they did in Classic.
u/Deadness on r/classicwow recently wrote up an analysis on their open-world kills, documenting that enemies of the same level as their character provide the same amount of experience as they do in Classic, while enemies who are lower level provide 4%-20% less experience per kill in WoW Forever.
Blizzard’s Intentions
When this issue was submitted as a potential bug, WoW Forever Senior Game Designer, Aidan “Zirene” Moon, stated that this decrease in low-level enemy experience granted was intentional. This experience nerf was created to offset all of the additional experience bonuses that players receive from Food Buffs and Restered Experience bonuses from Camping.
| “This is Not A Bug. This is an intended part of the game now that there are various exp buffs in the game (like eating food).” |
So, while players have made their voices heard about dungeon mob experience nerfs and dungeon quest experience nerfs, it appears that enemies in the open world will also be providing lower experience gains once WoW Forever launches on November 4th.
