WoW Forever Just Reworked Warrior Rage and Players Can’t Stop Talking About It

Warrior Rage generation has been completely revamped in WoW Forever, drastically reducing the amount of Rage gained. Auto-attacks no longer generate Rage based on the damage they deal, and critical strikes no longer generate additional Rage at all. These changes have quickly become one of the most-discussed Warrior topics in WoW Forever, with many discussions taking place across Blizzard forums, Reddit, and other platforms. The September 24 beta build didn’t change either mechanic.

Reducing the amount of Rage a Warrior can generate doesn’t just reduce the damage that they deal; it drastically alters the playstyle and rotation that makes Warrior so unique. Normally, Rage functions on an exponential feedback loop: deal more damage > get more Rage > use more abilities; this led to Warrior being the strongest class in the game due to how well they scaled with gear. Back in 2024, during Season of Discovery, Blizzard’s Josh Greenfield acknowledged that non-normalized Rage made Warrior very difficult to balance, stating: “If we had it to do over again, we’d likely have normalized rage“.

While some nerfs were definitely justified, the concern many players have is about the class fantasy and gameplay style being entirely different, rather than simply just about class balance. Extensive testing on the WoW Forever beta has uncovered how Rage currently works for Warriors, and has left many Warrior players concerned about how it will function at level 60.

Weapon Damage No Longer Increases Rage Generation

In Classic World of Warcraft, Rage is generated mostly through auto-attacks, granting more Rage based on the damage dealt. This makes upgrading your gear, especially your weapons, a major damage boost, as you will generate more Rage and be able to use even more abilities. In WoW Forever, this is no longer the case.

Normalized Rage means Rage is no longer generated based on the damage each auto-attack deals; instead, a predetermined amount of Rage is generated by each attack. This breaks the exponential loop of “more damage = more rage = more damage = more rage,” since weapons with the same base speed generate the same Rage per hit, regardless of their damage. The current Rage formula that has been found is as follows:

Per-Swing Rage Formula

One-Handed: Weapon Speed × 3.46 = Rage per successful auto-attack Two-Handed: Weapon Speed × 4.50 = Rage per successful auto-attack

This means that a level-1 gray weapon will generate the same Rage per swing as a level-60 epic weapon of the same speed, despite the major damage difference. This removes a major factor when considering a weapon upgrade, which would often be the additional Rage you would generate from the extra weapon damage.

Critical Strikes No Longer Generate Extra Rage

In World of Warcraft, a Warrior’s critical strikes deal double damage, whether it’s an auto-attack or an ability. Normally, an auto-attack critting would grant double Rage as well, even with normalized Rage. However, in WoW Forever, critting with an auto-attack grants no additional Rage when compared to a non-critical strike, further reducing the amount of Rage a Warrior can generate.

WoW Forever Senior Game Designer AidanZMoon (Zirene) marked this issue as “not a bug”, saying that the change was intentional.

The current system in WoW Forever mostly resembles Cataclysm’s style of Rage normalization, but is missing several of the additions that came alongside that expansion. However, in Cataclysm, critical strikes still generated additional Rage, and several new talents were added to each spec that would either directly generate Rage or give you a free ability use for a limited time. Several abilities had their Rage costs reduced, or entirely removed, such as Sweeping Strikes iconSweeping Strikes. Charge iconCharge could be used in combat to generate Rage, Deadly Calm iconDeadly Calm temporarily removed the Rage cost of your abilities, and Battle Shout iconBattle Shout generated Rage rather than spending it. These are only some of the major changes that came alongside the new Rage normalization system during Cataclysm; WoW Forever currently lacks many of these same compensating mechanics.

This is leaving players questioning if they will have enough Rage to use their main abilities, Bloodthirst iconBloodthirst and Whirlwind iconWhirlwind, let alone if they will ever have enough Rage to press Heroic Strike iconHeroic Strike. Classic Warrior gameplay was a mixture of “peaks and valleys” with Rage; sometimes you were empty, and other times you could barely spend it all in time. This gameplay style is what many fans have grown to enjoy: managing a resource bar that is unpredictable and requires fast decision-making. Removing the randomness elements of Rage makes it considerably more flat-lined and predictable, fundamentally altering how the class is played.

How To Increase Warrior Rage Generation In WoW Forever?

While damage dealt and critical strikes no longer increase Rage generation, Warriors still have several ways to improve their overall Rage income. A weapon’s base speed determines how much Rage each individual swing generates, while attack speed, hit chance, expertise, and several talents can increase how much Rage you generate over time.

Is There A Difference Between Weapon Speed and Attack Speed?

Weapon speed and attack speed are different entirely; weapon speed is the actual weapon’s attack speed, displayed directly on the weapon itself. Attack speed is a secondary stat that increases your Warrior’s rate of auto-attacks, allowing you to attack more frequently in a shorter period of time. With normalized Rage, only the weapon’s base attack speed is calculated into the “Per-Swing Rage Formula”, before any additional attack speed modifiers are applied.

Attack speed itself, such as Flurry iconFlurry, increases your rate of attacks after the formula is applied to your weapon. While attack speed will not modify the Rage generation formula, it will increase the number of attacks you land, meaning you will generate more Rage over time the higher your attack speed is. This makes attack speed one of the few remaining ways that Warriors can increase their Rage generation in WoW Forever.

Do Hit Chance And Expertise Increase Rage Generation?

Both hit chance and expertise increase your effective Rage generation, but they do not directly increase the amount of Rage generated by any individual attack. Instead, they prevent your attacks from being dodged, parried, or failing to hit an enemy, greatly increasing the number of successful attacks over time.

Hit chance directly reduces the chance that you will miss your target. If an auto-attack does miss, it deals no damage and generates zero Rage, completely wasting the swing entirely. This makes hit a very strong stat for Warriors in general, as it not only increases your damage dealt by landing more attacks, but also increases your Rage generation.

Expertise works in a similar way to hit, but reduces the chance that your attacks can be dodged or parried. The same as missing, if your attack is dodged or parried, it will deal no damage and generate zero Rage, and the swing will be wasted. Expertise is also a very desirable stat for Warriors, as landing as many of your auto-attacks as possible is extremely important for both damage and Rage generation.

Neither stat directly increases the Rage generated by an individual attack, but over the course of a long boss fight, landing several additional hits will grant you much more Rage over time.

New Warrior Rage Talents

Both Fury and Protection specializations have received several new and improved talents to help with their Rage generation overall.

Fury Warrior Rage Talents

Fury’s talents focus on the key playstyle of the spec, wielding a weapon in each hand. These talents take advantage of two weapons attacking constantly, trying to replace some of the other forms of Rage generation that were lost.

Unbridled Wrath iconUnbridled Wrath: Damaging melee attacks have up to a 60% chance to generate 1 additional Rage with 1-handed weapons, and 2 additional Rage with a 2-handed weapon. This has been increased from the previous 40%, and now offers an additional Rage point when using a 2-handed weapon.

Dual Wield Specialization iconDual Wield Specialization: Increases your off-hand weapon’s damage dealt, chance to hit, and Rage generated. This makes them generate double the amount of Rage they otherwise would. The additional hit rating greatly helps to combat the dual-wielding hit penalty of +19% miss chance to auto-attacks.

Ambition iconBoundless Rage: Increases maximum Rage by up to 30. This is worth mentioning as it does not increase Rage generation in any way; it only allows you to store up to an additional 30 Rage, for 130 Rage total. This is useful for pooling Rage during long fights, though Rage still decays out of combat, so don’t count on carrying the full 130 into a pool.

These talents provide additional Rage generation, but they do not restore the Rage scaling lost from weapon damage scaling and double Rage on critical strikes.

Protection Warrior Rage Talents

Protection Warrior has received several talent improvements for tanking, several of which aim to increase the amount of Rage you get while tanking with a shield equipped.

Shield Specialization iconShield Specialization: Generates up to 5 Rage when you block. This talent was around before, but only granted 1 Rage upon blocking.

Shield Mastery iconMaster of Defense: While using a shield, Dodging or Parrying has a 50% chance to generate 5 Rage per point; with 2 points, it becomes a 100% chance.

Focused Rage iconFocused Rage, Improved Thunder Clap iconImproved Thunder Clap, and Improved Sunder Armor iconImproved Sunder Armor all reduce the Rage cost of your offensive abilities that you are using constantly. These cost reductions add up quickly, saving you hundreds of Rage over the course of a long encounter. The September 24 beta build also moved Focused Rage up to Row 5, swapping places with Bastion, so Protection Warriors get the cost reduction earlier while leveling.

While these additions to the Protection spec are great, they fall off hard in late game content, where taking damage will be the majority of your Rage generated. These talents should be especially noticeable, however, while leveling and tanking dungeons.

Will Warrior Rage Change Before WoW Forever Launch?

The September 24 beta build introduced several Warrior changes, including a Sunder Armor threat fix, earlier Focused Rage for Protection and Arms tuning to Bloodthrill and Slam, but it left Rage normalization and crit Rage untouched. The normalization appears deliberate, but whether the current Rage values and compensating talents remain unchanged by WoW Forever’s November 4 launch is still an open question.
