Final 12.1 Rankings, Unholy’s Fall: Most Popular and Top DPS Specs in Midnight Mythic+ Season 2, Week 8

Starym's Avatar by Starym

While the latest class tuning pass only featured 6 specs, it’s had quite an effect on the rankings. Unholy has fallen, as expected, and Devourer and Subtlety are slowly rising with their buffs. There’s also more changes coming with this reset, as patch 12.1.5 brings some bigger adjustments. The popularity chart has also shifted a little, but it’s the tanks and healers that are shuffling around. Let’s see what’s going on in the final 12.1 week in the dungeons!

The Data

The data used in this article comes from Raider.IO‘s excellent analytics tools, taking into account all Mythic+ runs across all levels of play. The data is focused on this reset and not on the season as a whole.

The Most Popular Specs in Mythic+

Arcane keeps on slipping, but only little bits at a time. The Mage is another 0.2% down, but still has a huge lead. Beast Mastery only lost 0.1%, while Retribution stayed the same in 3rd. We do see a push in 4th, as Holy Paladin moves past Demonology, as the Warlock drops 0.2%. Both Elemental and Arms take down Blood, which also drops 0.2%, while Restoration Shaman pushes past Protection Paladin in 10th.

There’s a pretty big overall drop in population as well, as the Forever Beta took a bit of a toll. The top two specs lost around 100K each, with the average drop being around 10-15% for each spec.

Runs by Key Level

The week is about over (for NA anyway) and we still haven’t seen a timed 24. 23s actually got a lot more rigid in terms of the specs that finished them, moving down to just 11 from last week’s 13.

And here are the full numbers, including the amount of runs.

Group Composition Popularity

Note: The below chart shows the percentage of group popularity in relation to the top 30 compositions. This means that, for example, the top group says it’s 30% of the compositions, but that’s just 30% of the top 30. In reality, it’s just 2% of all groups played. You can see the smaller 2% number if you hover over the group line in the chart on the Raider.IO page.

The top composition remained exactly the same, as Blood, Holy Pala, Arcane, Elemental, Arms remain in the lead, but the 2nd group, exchanging Arcane for Assassination, has gained a very solid 2% at 7.5. We see a new No.3 emerge, with Guardian moving up in the world and replacing Blood in the top composition setup, grabbing 4.3% of the top 30.

Group Composition Success Rate

Things are very different at the top here as Guardian takes over. The top comp is nowhere to be seen, and the first Blood-sporting group is down in third. The top two groups have moved away from the rest of the pack, but the entire top 30 is within 10% of each other, as the chart takes all Mythic+ keys into consideration.

Mythic+ DPS Logs

The below logs are based on POINTS, and not actual damage or healing. This means that they log the timed completion for the specs, with higher keys getting more points, obviously. The time in which the dungeon is completed is also a factor. It is a much, much smaller factor, however. It grants only a few points for significantly faster completions compared to just any in-time finish. We’re also using the Normalized Aggregate Scores numbers, for clarity. This means that the top spec is marked as 100 and then the rest are ranked in relation to that peak point.

95th percentile DPS

The top 4 remain the same in the top percentiles, but right after that we see an immediate impact of the Unholy nerf. The DK drops two spots into 7th, as Devourer takes its buffs and moves past it. Frost DK, which didn’t get any changes in the tuning, is up four spots, as players presumably moved off from Unholy and gave it a try. The Rogues drop some spots, with Subtlety down one and Outlaw two, and Windwalker just holds on to its 9th spot, now sandwiched between them. Enhancement’s buff only managed to gain it one spot, moving it from 15th to 14th.

All Percentiles

Unholy is down two spots here as well, in 4th, with Devourer rising one in 6th thanks to its buffs. Retribution drops two in 8th as Frost DK also moves past it. We do see some significant movement from Enhancement here, however, as the Shaman uses its buffs to gain two spots and land in 10th. The bottom three are still double-Mage and Warlock.

Very High Key Raw DPS Numbers

Note: We’re also taking a look at the raw damage numbers from Mythicstats. They take the top runs for extremely high keys (+15-23) from WarcraftLogs and list the overall DPS for the dungeon, which includes non-combat time as well. They’re ranked by the average DPS numbers, with the very top of the top shown next to it.

While we’ve only seen Unholy drop a few spots in both popularity and the above logs, at the very top we see the giant fall some may have been expecting. It went from No.1 to 11th extremely quickly. The other big change is a surge from Assassination, moving three spots up and moving into 2nd. Devourer gains three as well, down in 8th, as does Subtlety, as they both make good use of their buffs.
