With week 1 under our belts, let’s take a look at where the meta stands for Mythic+ before we head into week 2. A lot will be changing for the new week with the new tuning pass happening with the weekly reset as well.
Midnight Season 2 Mythic+ Tier List
Below is the tier list updated for this week. This list reflects the current state of the meta and recent tuning changes. You can read more about how these lists are built in the Criteria section at the bottom of the post.
Important to highlight that this is only the first week of the season. Players, for the most part, still haven’t unlocked their 4-piece, and the sample size is really small. There will be a lot of movement in the coming weeks.
Highlights for the Week

Warlocks and Rets Rejoice
Warlocks and Ret Paladins have good reasons to be happy. With their latest tuning changes, Blizzard has showered all four specs with plenty of buffs. Demonology, in particular, is heading strong into week 2, which might cause it to go even higher in the lists for next week.
Retribution has received buffs for the last 2 tuning passes. With this, Ret will likely become a contender for a physical meta comp, in virtue of an underperformer that we will touch upon later.
Affliction has also received nice AoE and Single-target buffs, the latter being one of its biggest issues right now. These changes land the spec in A tier, up from B. The spec is likely still behind Demonology and Destro.
Windwalker: A Surprising Disappointment
Windwalker was showing a lot of promise during the last few weeks of PTR testing, labeling them Winwalkers, but as season 2 starts, the spec has failed to deliver on these promises. This could be a strong dependency on their new 4-piece bonus, but it is too early to tell. We’re holding the spec in TBD tier for the time being.
Tank Landscape
The latest tuning has buffed Brewmaster both damage- and survivability-wise. Physical groups will likely prefer it over Prot Warrior or VDH tanks, despite Brewmaster being the worst of the three due to Mystic Touch.
Guardian is also on the rise, likely one small buff away from reaching S-Tier. Right now, the only advantage Blood holds against bears is their damage. The gap is really small!
On the Falling Side
- Enhancement Shaman was barely holding on to A+ as of last week, but everything around it got buffed or solidified its spot, leaving it to drop to A-Tier.
- Unholy DK is hanging by a thread to A+, having the lowest damage output of the tier. The only reason it stays in A+ is due to its tankiness.
- Similar to Enhancement, Fire Mage has also fallen, now placed at C-Tier. No changes to the spec, just the competition got stronger.
- Augmentation follows Fire to the C-Tier. We likely overhyped it early on, counting on “sure” buffs that never materialized.
On the Rise
- Frost DK is a big question mark at the moment, likely between A and A+ tier, possibly matching Unholy. We need more data to tell.
- BM Hunters have received some very nice buffs in this last round. We’ve placed it on A-Tier, but it could very well end up higher in the coming weeks.
- Resto Druids have received some small buffs, enough to keep them in B-Tier
- Preservation Evokers received some nice buffs, solidifying them as the third-best healer for now. Mistweaver isn’t that far behind, however, and is way easier to play.
- Despite its B-Tier position, Devastation is a very good spec right now, and it will likely keep this status in the +12 to +15 range. It just won’t translate into higher keys as the season progresses.
Criteria of the Tier List
This tier list is based on the strength of each DPS specialization during Midnight Season 2. The placement takes both the raw throughput and the utility kit into consideration. Damage profile for Season 2 dungeons also plays a role in deciding positioning.
