Last week, we covered the changes to gearing in the upcoming Midnight expansion. Thanks to datamining, we now know what the crest cap will be in Midnight and have figured out their names.
Crest Cap Increased and Simplified Names
The current crest cap of 90 will be increasing to 100 in Midnight for each crest type. This increase is because we need more crests to fully gear in Midnight, and the removal of Valorstones.
For now at least, we’ve also found out Blizzard is simplifying the names of crests to match their associated gear track. Instead of a seasonal names such as Gilded Ethereal Crests, they’ll be named Myth Dawncrests. You can check out the full list below:
Adventurer Dawncrest -> Used to upgrade Adventurer equipment in Midnight Season 1 up to item levels 224-237.
Veteran Dawncrest -> Used to upgrade Veteran equipment in Midnight Season 1 up to item levels 237-250.
Champion Dawncrest -> Used to upgrade Champion equipment in Midnight Season 1 up to item levels 250-263.
Hero Dawncrest -> Used to upgrade Hero equipment in Midnight Season 1 up to item levels 263-276.
Myth Dawncrest -> Used to upgrade Myth equipment in Midnight Season 1 up to item levels 276-289.
Is the Increase Enough?
Currently, gear costs a varied amount of crests depending on the track, since crests are currently linked to item level. With the season 3 Turbo Boost, you need 105 Gilded Crests to reach 8/8 Myth, but that’s coming with uncapped crests. Prior to Turbo Boost, it required a 75 Gilded, with all prior crests only requiring 60. We know the costs of upgrading gear is doubling to 150 crests to upgrade each track. Here’s the table as a reminder:
Item Track Level | Crests Cost |
1/6 | 0 |
2/6 | 10 |
3/6 | 20 |
4/6 | 30 |
5/6 | 40 |
6/6 | 50 |
Total: 150 |
With costs at least doubling, but an increase of only 10 for the cap, Blizzard plans to make gearing much slower. In TWW, the weekly cap of 90 is enough to fully upgrade a piece of gear with some crests left over, to either save or spend. In Midnight, it will require the cap plus half of next weeks cap to fully increase a piece of gear. If you get your best-in-slot piece, or are upgrading for transmogs, you’ll have to wait a week to be fully empowered or to get that look for you collection. None of this includes crafting costs either, which we haven’t been able to datamine yet.
What Do You Think?
Is slowing down gearing the right idea? Will it make you enjoy the progression aspect of gearing more?
