A WoW player has uncovered a neat little behind-the-scenes trick, showing how Blizzard handled the phasing for the Sunwell/Darkwell—and it’s much simpler than you may have expected.
Sunwell/Darkwell
A clip shared by @marlam.in on Bluesky shows a free-cam view moving through the Sunwell, clipping through the walls and floor to reveal something surprising. The Darkwell phase isn’t a separate hidden instance. Instead, it’s placed directly underneath the normal Sunwell phase in the same physical space.
Some people may not know this, but the way they did the Darkwell phasing is by putting it below the Sunwell phase and having the entrance teleport you down while the Darkwell phase was active.

When the Darkwell phase is active, the entrance simply teleports players downward into that lower version of the zone, creating the illusion of a completely separate phased area. It’s something that most players would never notice, but seeing it from this perspective gives a fascinating look at how these illusions are built behind the scenes.
Sometimes, Azeroth’s secrets are hiding just below your character’s feet.
