The Most Played and Best Performing Specs in the Raids: DPS Logs

Starym's Avatar by Starym

It’s been a big and long week (and change) with no class tuning pass this reset, so it’s time to see how the long-term pre-12.0.5 raid logs are doing! We have both Heroic and Mythic, as well as spec popularity and performance to take a look at. Frost Mage dominates the popularity charts, while Demonology is the best-performing between the two difficulties, so let’s dive in.

Note: We are using normalized scores instead of raw DPS for the Warcraft Logs rankings. Normalized scores take into account the outlier boss fights where certain specs could stack massive DPS (due to the nature of the fight, whether it’s AoE spam or something else), which would then affect their overall score for the whole raid.

Heroic

Most Played Specs

Frost Mage is far and away the most popular spec in the three raids, getting a very solid 60+K lead on the next spec with almost 300,000 players! The following four specs are much closer together, with Retribution at No.2 and Devourer at No.5 only 40K apart. It’s only at No.6, with Beast Mastery, that we see a more significant dropoff, with almost 50K separating the Hunter and Demon Hunter above it. And while Frost may be the top dog by a longshot, both its fellow Mage specs are in the bottom 3, joined by Outlaw, and all sporting around 10K players.

Heroic Spec Population

Overall Damage 95th Percentile

Devourer has dropped off quite a bit since last we checked in, falling 5 spots from No.1, which is now claimed by Augmentation. A Warlock remains steady at No.2, but it’s a huge shift in specs, as Demonology skyrockets 8 spots up, while the former silver occupant, Destruction, drops 6 to No.8. Frost, Shadow, and Marksmanship all move one space up. As one Evoker rises, another falls, with Devastation losing 5 spots, leaving Balance in its previous No.7 spot. The bottom 3 features Arcane, with Fire just a little outside it, as Affliction and Fury grab the remaining two slots.

Overall Damage All Percentiles

The generalist bracket sees some major changes from the top percentiles, as Shadow is doing a whole lot better, slotting into No.3! Assassination is also living the life, with Survival surging as well. Augmentation is all the way down in 7th, leaving Frost Mage and Demonology to rule the roost. Unholy and Balance round out the top 10, while Fire makes it into the bottom 3 here after all.

Boss Only Damage All Percentiles

The single-target charts show us where Assassination’s power comes from, as usual, as it sits at No.1, but just barely manages to fight off Unholy and Augmentation.

Individual Bosses

We’re taking a look at the latter bosses in Voidspire and March, as the Mythic parse numbers for those bosses are very, very low still.

Lightblinded Vanguard (Voidspire)

Crown of the Cosmos (Voidspire)

Belo’ren (March on Quel’Danas)

Midnight Falls

Mythic

Most Played Specs

All the numbers here are dramatically smaller, and the spec order is also slightly different, but the No.1 is the same, with Frost Mage in the lead at 45K. Retribution is getting a lot less play here, but still manages to hold on to the top 5, getting beaten out by Unholy, Demo, and Devourer. The non-Frost Mage situation is visually even more depressing here, as we see them both stacked up right at the very bottom, just barely breaking 1K players put together.

Overall Damage All Percentiles

The top two remain very stable since last we checked, with the Devo/Demo combo still ruling over the rest. Survival moves up a few spots to claim fourth, while Marksmanship pulls off a huge 7-spot move to grab that bronze slot. The Evokers banded together, as Augmentation rises 9 spots to join the very stable Devastation. Shadow also benefited a lot from that last set of buffs, getting the most-improved trophy, with 12 spots gained. There is some good news for non-Frost Mages, as Fire managed to get a hold of a top 10 spot, only two below Frost! Arcane isn’t doing as badly as in Heroic either, but does find itself in the bottom half of the chart. At the very bottom, we find some new faces, as Elemental, Frost DK, and Feral aren’t doing too well in Mythic.

Boss Only Damage All Percentiles

The direct damage charts are pretty much the same as in Heroic, with Augmentation doing a little better.

Individual Bosses

We’ll be looking at the early bosses here, as very few guilds have reached the last few.

Chimaerus (Dreamrift)

Fallen-King Salhadaar (Voidspire)

Vaelgor and Ezzorak
