Windwalkers Rise + a Forming Meta: Most Played and Best-Performing Specs in Midnight Mythic+ Season 2, Week 3

Starym's Avatar by Starym

A meta is beginning to form as player grab their gear and set bonuses, and, perhaps more importantly, we didn’t get any class tuning for this week! There’s still plenty of movement, especially in the spec popularity chart. We also see some contradictory movement in the two charts, with some specs dropping in popularity but rising in performance. Let’s dive in and see what’s going on.

The Data

The data used in this article comes from Raider.IO‘s excellent analytics tools, taking into account all Mythic+ runs across all levels of play. The data is focused on this reset and not on the season as a whole.

The Most Popular Specs in Mythic+

Arcane’s lead has not budged at all, even though the Mage has dropped a bit of its playerbase, losing 0.4 of its 10.6% cut. The runner-up, Blood, also dropped the same amount of players. In third place, we see a new face, with Beast Mastery breaking through and rising a very big four spots, grabbing an exta 1.1% of the playerbase this past week. The Hunter literally swapped places with Arms, as the Warrior dropped four spots into 7th. Demonology is also on the rise, moving three up into 6th, right behind the healer and DPS Palas. Augmentation, Fire and Survival remain at the bottom, all of them keeping their 0.1, 02, and 0.3% of the playerbase.

Runs by Key Level

Another level has been breached, as 21s are on the menu, and already have quite a lot of specs finishing them, although the vast majority is of the top group comp variety.

And here are the full numbers, including the amount of runs.

Group Composition Popularity

Note: The below chart shows the percentage of group popularity in relation to the top 30 compositions. This means that, for example, the top group says it’s 30% of the compositions, but that’s just 30% of the top 30. In reality, it’s just 2% of all groups played. You can see the smaller 2% number if you hover over the group line in the chart on the Raider.IO page.

The top group mildly drops, 0.5% lower, and now comprising “just” 13.2% of the top 30 groups (and 0.9% of the total group compositions). While it’s still in a very big lead, it’s not as insanely dominant as the end-of-season comp we saw, which had over a quarter of all top 30 group population. The other top 3 groups are around 6% each, the second one replacing Elemental with Demo, and the third with Retribution.

Mythic+ DPS Logs

The below logs are based on POINTS, and not actual damage or healing. This means that they log the timed completion for the specs, with higher keys getting more points, obviously. The time in which the dungeon is completed is also a factor. It is a much, much smaller factor, however. It grants only a few points for significantly faster completions compared to just any in-time finish. We’re also using the Normalized Aggregate Scores numbers, for clarity. This means that the top spec is marked as 100 and then the rest are ranked in relation to that peak point.

95th percentile DPS

While it may be significantly dropping players, Arms remains on top of the top percentiles, actually pulling slightly away from Elemental in 2nd. Feral has a solid week as it moves three spots up into 5th, pushing Outlaw out and breaking the Rogue combo there. The other big riser is Windwalker, also gaining three spots to slot into 7th place. Devourer and Subtlety are down to make room for the newcomers, while Demonology pushes up and just barely makes it into the top 10.

All Percentiles

Arcane is still doing better in the generalist bracket, barely keeping Elemental at bay. Windwalker makes an even bigger leap here and finishes up higher, rising a very impressive 7 spots to land in 6th. Unholy is still holding on, down one, while Ret is on the rise, gaining two to slot into 10th place. The current ruler of the raid logs is way down in the bottom 3, joining Destruction and Frost Mage.

Very High Key Raw DPS Numbers

Note: We’re also taking a look at the raw damage numbers from Mythicstats. They take the top runs for extremely high keys (+14-21) from WarcraftLogs and list the overall DPS for the dungeon, which includes non-combat time as well. They’re ranked by the average DPS numbers, with the very top of the top shown next to it.

The top keys are very stable in the top 6, but then have a giant burst out of Beast Mastery. The Hunter leaps 10 spots up into 7th, joined by Windwalker’s 6-spot jump. Feral is actually up a solid chunk here, moving into the top 10.
