A viral video imagining World of Warcraft with photorealistic graphics has reignited an age-old debate: should Azeroth ever look truly realistic?
The discussion kicked off after @TheRealWizar on X shared a comparison video, imagining what WoW’s zones could look like if Blizzard abandoned its signature “cartoonie graphics” in favor of a more modern upgrade.
It’s safe to say, the response was pretty unanimous.
Creator Geoff Thew didn’t hold back, calling the video’s realistic graphics “bland, samey, high res garbage”, while streamer Esfand pointed out that WoW’s stylised look has aged far better than many MMORPGs released around the same time.
The overwhelming reaction across social media was unsurprisingly consistent: realism may be technically impressive, but it strips away too much of WoW’s identity.
Blizzard has largely followed that philosophy themselves. Rather than completely reinventing Azeroth, each expansion they have refined lighting, character models, and environmental detail, updating the world while still keeping the unmistakable Warcraft aesthetic intact.
Performance Still Matters
Whilst players would be reluctant to move away from WoW’s art style, partially because of their fond memories of the good old days, the game’s graphics aren’t purely about nostalgia. It’s also about performance.
Stylised graphics have helped the game run well on a wide range of PCs (and potatoes) for more than two decades now. This art style generally puts far less strain on hardware than cutting-edge photorealistic graphics—and that’s especially important for an MMO where large-scale raids, epic battlegrounds, and crowded cities can already strain systems (Silvermoon, we’re looking at you—though this addon can help that!)
Not Everyone Is Against Better Graphics
Many players have made it clear they’re waiting to see Blizzard modernize more older parts of Azeroth! The reception to Midnight‘s revamped Silvermoon City has been so positive. Players have praised the updated capital for looking more detailed and modern while still feeling unmistakably like the original Blood Elven city.
Would you like to see Azeroth in full modern graphics, or are you joining the defence against photorealism? Let us know!
