After four years, quest designer Johnny Cash has returned to the World of Warcraft team at Blizzard as a Principal Designer II.
From WoW to Fortnite
Cash left Blizzard in January 2022 to join the Fortnite team as a Lead Quest Designer and later became Design Director from January 2023 until March 2026. In his professional profile, Cash highlights his role in revamping Fortnite’s Battle Pass system, improving the new-player experience, and efforts to improve cross-team collaboration and unified goals.
New Position at Blizzard
To those unfamiliar with the corporate ladder, Cash’s new role as Principal Game Designer likely means he will be more focused on creating content rather than managing other designers. From his LinkedIn, Cash highlights the following goals with his new position at Blizzard:
- “Help express the story of WoW via excellent exploration, gameplay, and activities.”
- “Partner with leadership, peers, QA, and producers to plan, implement, document, and test content.”
- “Drive refinement and evolution of Content Design standards across the team.”
- “Mentor team members through creating and iterating designs, and on implementation best practices.”
- “Collaborate with WoW’s other discipline teams to create a cohesive game experience.”
- “Promote, contribute to, and participate in our culture of inclusion and diversity.”
Previous Work in WoW
Previously, Johnny Cash worked at Blizzard for over 9 years, starting as a Game Design Intern in 2011 and ending as a Senior Game Designer II in 2022. When joining Blizzard, Cash’s first project was the prototype of the Pet Battle System for Mists of Pandaria. After that, Cash worked on major features for Legion, like creating the Artifact questlines for Retribution Paladin, Restoration Druid, Beast Mastery Hunter, and every Rogue and Demon Hunter ones. He also designed Paladin, Rogue, and Demon Hunter Class Halls, the Balance of Power questline, and the Corrupted Ashbringer hidden appearance quests.
Beyond Legion, Cash worked on many different questlines like Tyrande’s Vengeance in Patch 8.1, Stormsong Valley, and others. In Shadowlands, Cash provided the initial design for the Covenant Sanctum feature and was the design lead for the Anima Conductor system.
Cash has also worked on defining modern quest standards for WoW and has mentored many designers of the WoW team who have shaped the game since then.
We’re excited to see Cash back in the WoW team and can’t wait to see his next piece of content.
