The Prey system is not exactly new to most players. If you have been following World of Warcraft: Midnight, you already know it is one of the expansion’s main max-level features.
What is new is that Blizzard released an official video walking through how the system works in detail, from tracking your target to unlocking Hardmode and Nightmare difficulty.
After finishing the campaign, players can pick up contracts from Magister Astalor in Silvermoon and begin hunting powerful enemies across Midnight’s zones. One of the more interesting parts of the system is that your prey can ambush you at any time, leading to surprise fights before the final confrontation.
And even though the theme of Prey is ambushes, the system is fully opt-in. Hunts only begin after accepting a contract, so you will not be randomly attacked during regular questing.
Weekly Hunts With Real Rewards
Prey acts as an outdoor alternative to Delves. Each week you unlock hunts across different difficulties, and completing them progresses the World row of your Great Vault. This goes beyond just mounts and pets. The official video shows how Prey’s weekly loop, difficulty differences, and Great Vault progression make it feel like a distinct endgame path.
Rewards include:
- Gold and Dawncrests based on difficulty
- A Prey Seeker’s Chest with gear and materials
- Progress toward the seasonal Prey Seeker’s Journey track
The first four hunts each week are Warband-wide boosted, which makes it alt-friendly right from the start.
Based on the video, Prey feels more like an additional open-world progression layer than a full pillar feature like Delves.
Hardmode And Nightmare Difficulty
If normal hunts feel too easy for you, Hardmode adds affixes like Seeping Gore puddles, death penalties, and increasing damage as you close in on your target.
Nightmare difficulty pushes even further, adding a Bloody Spirit that chases you and extra pressure Blizzard describes as comparable to late-stage Delves.
Cosmetics, mounts, pets, transmog sets, achievements, and even housing decorations are all linked to progression. For a full look at the mounts, pets, and gear tied to Prey, we covered all rewards in detail in our earlier breakdown.

Prey launches with Midnight in March and unlocks after completing the campaign. If you are looking for a step-by-step overview of how the system works, including unlocks and progression details, our full Prey system guide covers everything in one place.
