Midnight Prey System Guide for Midnight: How to Unlock, Difficulties, and Rewards
Learn more about Prey, the optional open-world activity introduced in the Midnight Expansion.
Introduction
Prey is a new optional hunting system that lets you pursue powerful foes across the Midnight Expansion zones for gear and various cosmetic rewards. This system adds an extra layer to world content that can make it more fun and exciting!
How to Enable the Prey System
As mentioned, Prey is an optional feature, which means you must first enable it by visiting Magister Astalor Bloodsworn in Murder Row in Silvermoon City, starting at level 90. You can easily identify Astalor’s location by the Prey icon on your map. After a short questline you can then accept contracts to hunt down prey in each of the Midnight zones.
How Prey Works in Midnight
Once you pick a contract, you can venture out into the zone you selected. Completing any world content, such as World Quests, including the ones that become available once you enable this system, killing rares, interacting with treasures, and participating in Prey activities will help Astalor's magic focus on the location of your prey, furthering your hunt.
Prey activities are new world interactions that define this system and are only available while it is activated. These include defeating your prey, who may ambush you at any time while interacting with world content, disarming traps, which can be used against your prey to instantly make them flee if they ambush you, and defeating Coalesced Anguish, enemies that may be summoned in the area.
After completing enough of these activities, Astalor will locate the position of your prey. You will now be able to summon and fight them, and once defeated, you will be rewarded with:
- Progress toward your season’s Prey journey.
- A chest containing gear with quality based on the difficulty completed.
- Dawncrests, Midnight’s Gear Upgrade System material.
Restored Coffer Key shards, providing an additional source of keys for Bountiful Delves.- Progress toward the Great Vault in the World tier slot.
Helpful Tip: After you are ambushed, follow the blood mist trail and take an attack at your prey to further increase your progress.
Prey Difficulties
The Prey system is available in three difficulties. You are limited to one hunt per difficulty, per week, per zone.
- Normal Difficulty: On this difficulty, nothing extra occurs, and other players in the open world can help you take down your target.
- Hard Difficulty: Enemies on this difficulty come with a mechanic called Torment. Which will have you increase damage by 2% and stacks as you persue your prey, ramping up quickly.
- Nightmare Difficulty: This is the hardest difficulty, and the target is extremely challenging to defeat. Torment is active and stronger, increasing damage you take by 4% stacking and increasing by 4% every 60 seconds while no in a rested area. Make sure you persue your prey with haste! No groups are allowed to take down your foe, so proceed with caution.
Hard and Nightmare difficulty will also have additional affixes during your hunt. Each specefic to the difficulty and expected to rotate throughout seasons.
- Hard & Nightmare: Will reduce progress of you hunt if you die.
- Hard & Nightmare: Seeping Gore, will occasionally appear beneath you while in combat. Make sure to move out or take extra damage!.
- Nightmare: Echo of Predation, a bloody spirit of you will approach you. Kite it or take MASSIVE amounts of damage if it reaches you.
- Nightmare: Bloody Command, Astalor will whisper into your ear to kill for him. Make sure to kill anything, including critters, to avoid a nasty DoT.
Prey Rewards
The Prey system grants credit toward the Great Vault based on the difficulty completed, rewarding up to Hero-track loot, similar to Delves.
