With the Diablo franchise celebrating its 30th birthday this year, Blizzard said fans would “freak out” at BlizzCon – but why should they? Some of the clues hint at nothing less than a remaster or even a remake of Diablo 1, the game that defined the ARPG genre.
Diablo 1 Playable on the BlizzCon Show Floor
According to the recently published floor map of BlizzCon 2026, there will be a dedicated demo area for all three legacy Diablo games, including Diablo 1.
In Hall A, Diablo won’t be the only legacy game available. Alongside it, Diablo 2 and 3 will be playable as well as Warcraft 3 and Heroes of the Storm. This lines up with an unusually strong focus on Blizzard’s legacy game line-up – after all, there will be two whole panels about it, “Custodians of Legacy Games” and a “Classic Game Deep Dive.”
The “Diablo” Twitch Badge
Another interesting detail has been revealed in Blizzard’s BlizzCon Viewership Guide, which lists Diablo 4’s Twitch rewards. They include a “Diablo” badge, which, according to Stream Database, is directly associated with the original Diablo game category on Twitch – not Diablo 4.
As we all know, the name of the game also describes its main villain, the Prime Evil Diablo, who is showcased on the badge – so we could also be looking at a more literal return of Diablo in one of Blizzard’s Diablo games.
Remaster, Remake – or Nothing at All?
Over the years, Diablo’s community has begged for a remaster or even a full remake of the ARPG classic – not least due to Blizzard’s treatment of Diablo 2: Resurrected and Reign of the Warlock, the first major content update for Diablo 2, which brought the first new playable class in 25 years.
It appears Blizzard has been putting more focus on its beloved IPs across the board this year, including StarCraft, where a potential new release was teased earlier this week. Putting Diablo 1 on the list would be much more than fan service: it’d be the perfect birthday present for the community and the franchise itself, and it’d definitely make us freak out!
