Diablo 4 Art Directors Show How Skovos Turns From Bright to Grim

Stan Avatar by Stan

Blizzard has uploaded a new video on Diablo’s YouTube channel where Diablo 4’s Art Directors show us Skovos through their eyes in an exclusive behind-the-scenes look.

Sense of a Color Progression

Very early on, one of the Art Directors has mapped out a color guide for how you want the environment to look. Visually as a player, as you’re moving through, you don’t want the same color palette. Fortunately, the expansion has a story that allowed them to ramp those colors up, as you move through the game.

The color progression is tied to what’s happening in the campaign.

Skovos is the origin of all humanity, so you have remnants of that culture dotting the isles. You see signs of the original culture and the new Askari living on top.

The zone feels Mediterranean-esque with lots of touch points that make it feel familiar and the colors are reminiscent of what you expect of a culture that’s surrounded by water.

The intent there is to take you down that typical Diablo path where things get dark and gloomy and full of doom, but they needed to create visual contract so that the journey feels meaningful.

Enough spoilers for now! You can watch the full 10-minute video down below.
